Does anyone know anything about Tramadol, I was prescribed it for pain relief, took one and did'nt like the effect, felt too much like using. Anyway I think it must be addictive and you can buy it over the counter here in France......anyone with knowledge of it please can you let me know? tHANKS indigo

| Hi Indigo
I have been doing a ton of research on Tramadol. I was given some for pain relief and have never felt better as far as my depression being lifted. So I did extensive research on Tramadol as an antidepressant. There are a lot of people that it is the best antidepressant they have ever taken. The "experts" say that chances of addiction are minimal, but IMO if a person has a leaning towards being addicted to opiates, well then Tramadol will be no different. The FDA has approved the ER(Extended Release) of Tramadol in 100, 200 and 300 mg. sizes. Most research has shown Tramadol to be a very effective pain reliever, but the jury is still out about Tram as an antidepressant. I think it has the ability of an SSNRI, which is different then the regular SSRI's namely Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft etc. I am seeing a psychiatrist for help finding the right medication cocktail for my constant depression/anxiety feelings. I will ask about the Tramadol and get back to you. Mike

Hi Annie Tramadol or Ultram has addictive qualities. It does effect your brain chemistry and acts as an /SSRI. It can also cause seizures in some patients. It is a very effective pain reliever and when taken along with Acetaminophen Extra Strength, the effect is augmented and presumably safe. This "brand name" with the two drugs combined is known as Ultracet. I can take this med once in a while. I get side effects like pounding heart and it appears that when the day after I take it, I am sensitive and depressed. I found when I stay away from it, I am much better emotionally. I get the same thing with Vicodin. No heart pounding but unusually depressed the day after I take it. It works fabulously on the pain but at this poiint I would rather suffer the physical pain then the emotional pain. So it seems I am just the opposite of Mike. Just some personal observations, Annie. Love you... Starr |

| Sorry Indigo.. I had to refresh before I could type anything else but the title. I have been taking Tramadol for a couple of years now. I have had several corrective surgeries on my back, broke my neck and my tail bone a couple of times! I live in Mexico in the winter and don't have much arthritis there because of the nice climate but when I come back to the foggy damp here in California I am in agony. I had a very bad bout of pain last year and I began taking 50 mg with my morning coffee. I've been on that schedule taking another 50 mg when I finish my work for the day since. The reason I prefer Ultram is that I don't get high off it. I did feel a little disorientated the first week or two I took it but being a stoner has it's advantages... I just rode with it (I didn't have a choice, I was in severe pain) and now it feels like an extremely effective aspirin. Because of the condition of my spine I've always been able to get whatever drugs I want.. scary to think too much about. In recovery I was concerned about my "addictive behavior" I have had problems in the past with painkillers.. a whopper of a vicodin addiction years ago. Anyway, Tramadol is the lesser of the evils for me and I would no more think of taking more than directed than I would entertain the idea of going out and wasting myself with a bottle and/or a bag! I love my life now! I have not been regularly depressed but I have been in an exceptionally good mood since taking the Tramadol. Maybe it's the drug.. Maybe it's NO pain.. Maybe it's because I am NOW a productive member of my family and out there trying to do the next right thing. Just because I have experienced poor judgement in the past does not mean I will do it in the future.

My Pdoc said Tramadol only works in "certain individuals"(No further explanation from him?) for treating depression. He admitted he has done very little reading or research on Tramadol as an antidepressant. So according to him it is increase the Zoloft dosage.

I'm taking them as the doc prescribed and that is enough to block my day to day pain. I did have a terrible attack of sciatica and Tramadol didn't touch it. I had to go into the doc's office for a shot of morphine. I don't think Tramadol would block enough pain for anything more serious than my every day arthritis and disintegrating disc pain, but for now it works really well for me. Like I said earlier I enjoy it because after that first initial week it doesn't, even for a minute, get me high.

I took it for over a year, as needed. I never got a high of any kind. I had no cravings and no problem stopping them when we found something more effective. I will still take a couple of hubbies if my back is really bothering me. They were prescribed to me for headaches along with a high dose of Vioxx which has been taken off the market. At the time the combo worked. Now there is a much better med for migraines and I am not having much of a problem with those anymore. I think they were mostly stress. And hormones. Anyway be aware that an overdose of tramadol can be fatal. Don't take more than is prescribed. As always, everyone's chemistry is different, I have heard of some people becoming addicted to them and they were considering making them a controlled substance at one time. Good luck hugs and love, live
