Anyone else? Its weird dealing with this. I have moments where any little thing can jog a memory whether it be a smell, sound or anything.
Trying hard to contain the emotions when it happens but dont know how just yet.
How ya'll get through it?

Hey there,

Are you seeing a counselor? That's the only thing that helps me with it.
I can totally relate to what you are saying.

Sometimes you can always have something with you, like a penny or something, and when the flashback comes, stare at that and play
with it in your hands, sometimes things like that can help you stay in
the present.

I used to grab a pillow and curl up in a ball and just let the emotions come. I used to try and sit and look back at the memories and let them come back up in little pieces.

The first were the hardest. The terror I felt when remembering was very hard. It helped to tell myself that the fear was a child's fear and as an adult I could handle it. I lived through it when it happened. I could live through remembering.

Counseling and support are very important. I was fortunate. I didn't have ongoing flashbacks. I just had the memory come up completely and then I was done with it.

My daughter also has PTSD and her flashbacks were like yours are. She went to counseling and group therapy and had it managed in about a year.

It's really hard, but you'll get through it. There is always someone here if you need to talk.

Big hugs,
MG

Don't forget the Anxiety forum here too. It has some great posts on PTSD. I suffer from post 9/11 PTSD and unlike MG I actually get the flashbacks of walls crumbling down and so on. I was not there that day but I had two co-workers who died in the tragedy and it took two days to be able to discover my great-aunt had avoided her walk by the WTC that day.

There's this therapy with eye movement or something which I forget the name of constantly but it's proven to be helpful for ppl suffering from PTSD, they don't know why or how it helps but it helps.

There might be some support groups for people w/PTSD. THat might be a good option. I remember talking to a war vet who was going to a PTSD group. I don't know if they have them for non-war related PTSD.
