Anyone else? Its weird dealing with this. I have moments where any little thing can jog a memory whether it be a smell, sound or anything. Trying hard to contain the emotions when it happens but dont know how just yet. How ya'll get through it? |

Hey there, Are you seeing a counselor? That's the only thing that helps me with it. I can totally relate to what you are saying. Sometimes you can always have something with you, like a penny or something, and when the flashback comes, stare at that and play with it in your hands, sometimes things like that can help you stay in the present.

I used to grab a pillow and curl up in a ball and just let the emotions come. I used to try and sit and look back at the memories and let them come back up in little pieces. The first were the hardest. The terror I felt when remembering was very hard. It helped to tell myself that the fear was a child's fear and as an adult I could handle it. I lived through it when it happened. I could live through remembering. Counseling and support are very important. I was fortunate. I didn't have ongoing flashbacks. I just had the memory come up completely and then I was done with it. My daughter also has PTSD and her flashbacks were like yours are. She went to counseling and group therapy and had it managed in about a year. It's really hard, but you'll get through it. There is always someone here if you need to talk. Big hugs, MG |

Don't forget the Anxiety forum here too. It has some great posts on PTSD. I suffer from post 9/11 PTSD and unlike MG I actually get the flashbacks of walls crumbling down and so on. I was not there that day but I had two co-workers who died in the tragedy and it took two days to be able to discover my great-aunt had avoided her walk by the WTC that day.
