Migraine meds?

Has anyone ever experienced a daily injection for migraines?
I know of someone who says they are taking this daily for migraine headaches.
I understand sp? emetrix is taken by injection at the time of a headache, but I have never heard of the daily treatment, and was hoping someone may have had some input for me. I do not think it is emitrix.....
My sil takes Emitrix sparingly, and she says it is used that way as far as she knows. It is hard on the heart..and other things.
I think they are quacking about the injection??????
Add to this Effexor, Lortabs and who knows what else. We think they have gone looney from all of this, and have no idea about the shot. Yikes!!!
Definitely looney, and almost manic.....make up things that are not happening just to have turmoil constantly.
THanks!!!

I think something hinky is going on here.

I have had a history of chronic, more days than not headaches, and frequent migraines, no more tho' but I was going to recommend Relpax for the Migraines. One pill knocks it out and it is over in less than a day rather than lasting for 3 or 4.
My headaches were related to stress, depression and anxiety. These are treated, recovery has been a part of it stress-wise and I only get the occassional migraine now triggered by hormones. In fact, the older I get, the rarer they are.

Ask your friend if she has had a MRI. Daily migraines are really rare, I think.

Other people will know more. Ask eddie z or she will be along.

I am kind of vulnerable about being lied to. my bs detector isn't finally tuned.

Thanks for you input, and I suspect this is a messed up situation, and very unhealthy person. Detach, detach, detach!

This is from the Imitrex Website:

"For migraine sufferers who need fast relief of morning migraines or migraines with rapid onset, an IMITREX Injection (IMITREX STATdose System®*) can provide fast relief.

The usual dose is 1 injection. Some people have relief of their pain within 10 minutes (for IMITREX 6 mg and placebo, respectively, relief at 10 minutes: 16% and 4%; at 30 minutes: 49% and 12%) after using IMITREX Injection; most people get relief within 1 hour. If after 1 hour you have no relief at all, consult your doctor. If you have some relief after 1 hour, or if your migraine comes back, you can take a second dose. Always wait 1 hour before taking another dose. Do not use more than 2 injections in 24 hours. Be sure to follow the dosing instructions given to you by your doctor.

"The most common side effects are soreness and redness in the area where it was injected (usually goes away within an hour), unusual sensations (eg, tingling, warm/hot sensations), dizziness, and flushing. Other side effects may occur. Be sure to tell your doctor about any that you experience."

I have had migraines for 40 years and sometimes I have gotten them daily. It is not common to get daily migraines over a long period, but I have talked to other people who have had daily migraines also.

I tried Imitex, but didn't feel it worked well for me so returned to my usual med.

Thanks for the real info, Anna!!!

I was required to have a MRI to test for unusual blood flow patterns, tumour etc.

It was finally established that it was related to the hormone that starts my period. I was to take a med to lower my blood pressure for 3 days before my period and then if I got a migraine to take one Relpax.

I also have TMJ, that contributes to troublesome headaches.

I do think it is reasonable to look for cause rather than daily mask symptoms, esp ongoing and over a period of time.

I almost died from a kidney infection because my symptom was bad headache, and they were so used to treating me for migraines they knocked out the pain and the kidney detioration progressed.

Wow, I totally agree with you Live, that's a real risk when you're taking meds, that you will be masking some other pain. I think my migraines were related to hormones as well and they have lessened since menopause. TMJ is a whole other problem to deal with isn't it, but I think it can aggravate/cause migraines. I've read that the best way to treat it is to have a mouth device/braces type thing made by a dentist?

My specialist said those were crutches. He put me on a muscle relaxer but I couldn't take them because they knocked me out. Had two little kids at home! So, I learned to hold my mouth differently, the only thing that gets it out of whack now is too much stress, it actually tenses those vulnerable muscles and pulls my neck and cranial bones out of place.
I walked around at home with the tip of my tongue between my teeth with my jaw held forward. It worked!

mendingheart,
I know of no drug for migraines that is injected on a daily basis unless the headaches are daily like Anna was talking about. The drugs taken daily for migraine prevention are all oral as far as I know. Then there are the ones used when the headaches actually occur, like Imitrex. Some of them are injectable, but like you noted, they are just for when migraines occur. Hope this helps!

Love and hugs,
Eddie
