| Cutting;; Hey;; this is my first little thingy on here. But yeah, do you say cutting is a mental issue. I`ve been cutting for about 2 years now, on and off. The farthest I`ve gone without cutting before is like 2 months, which I broke that last thursday. But yeah, speak your mind, it`s not like I will bitch you out if you do. |

Hi welcome to SR, there are many others here with the same addiction you have. No ones going to hate on you here, we all are dealing with an addiction of one form or another. I watched a thing on Tv tonight about folks who customize there bodies, such as full body tatoos, piercings, scarifacation, ect. A psychologist that was featured stated that many folks do this because they were abused mentally/physically when they were growing up. He states that these modifacations are a way for the people to take the pains dealt to them into their own hands rather then letting someone else deal out the pain. He says its their way of saying look, you can't hurt me anymore, only I can hurt myself. It was an interesting show. Anyways, In my early teen/goth years I sliced my arms up pretty good. I believe for me it was a reach out to my family for attention, everybody has their own reasons I imagine and I am sure its a mental thing but obviosly there is a lot of physical addiction going on there, its an addiction to the hurt. Stick around you will find lots of good info, and lots of caring folks that go above and beyond to offer their help. Adam |

Hey Bangbang, Welcome to SR. Cutting is a problem that effects many teenagers today. People do it for different reasons, but the reasons usually revolve around escaping/embracing feelings. Some people cut to get away (a type of disassociating from 'real life'), others do it to feel something becuase they feel numb to the world. It is one way for people to cope with problems they are having. We have some active discussions on cutting over at sober-teens.com (http://www.sober-teens.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=35) that you should check out. Take some time to read through the links, I think you'll find that there are others who are going through similar situations, and maybe something they said will 'click'. If you have any questions, etc feel free to drop me a line. (I'm the moderator of this forum and also the Impulse Control Forum where the links are at ST) *edit* Here is a thread about cutting that has some good info: HERE (cutting...) -pedagogue

Yes cutting is a mental disorder. People usually cut when they are dealing with something in their past that made them feel numb and like they died inside. Usually something really bad and you cut so you can feel. There is an underlying issue to your cutting and you should seek the help of a therapist to talk it through and help you deal with it and maybe some medication for awhile to help with the anxiety that makes you cut. There is help. I knew a girl who used to cut herself. Her legs look like they went through a cheese grater but with therapy and some medication she hasnt cut for over 2 years now so there is hope.

I used to cut when I knew that I had hurt someone. Kinda like a reminder to not ever do that to someone again. I felt bad about hurting someone else & thought that by hurting myself, it would make it better. Thought that looking at the scars later would remind me not to make the same mistake again. It was more of an I don't like myself sort of thing. I was usually drunk or high when I actually did it. The last time was 6 years ago. I have since quit the alcohol & drugs. The thoughts still come when I get in the depressed mode, but have not done it. I pray myself through it.
