Bi means two and polar is used for state of mind. Bipolar is distinguished by two states of mind, mania and severe depression which alternate back and forth on a routine. Lithium and/or other mood stabilizers are used to control this routine.

Ben,
Thanks for the explanation. I have heard that term used mant times but I never really understood how it manifested itself in terms of behavior. Some people I have met in support groups have identified themselves as sufffering from this condition. How is your recovery going ?

The older term for bipolar is manic-depression. That may help the term to "hit home' for you. I think we've all seen t.v. shows where a classic manic-depressive (or artistic) temperamnet is portrayed by some actor. An unfortunate side effect of manic-depression is a tendency to abuse substances, presumably in an attempt to self-medicate. Thus many of the manic-depressant folks you may run into here will be "dual-diagnosis" cases. I, myself, am one of those.
If you're interested in more onformation on this, post here anytime and I'll be happy to oblige.

Help Me

WELL IM JUST GOING TO SAY FROM EXPERIENCE THAT " BI-POLAR/MANIC DEPRESSION " IS OBVIOUSLY A TERRIBLE ILLNESS THAT I WISH UPON NO-ONE. MY FIANCE OF 7 YEARS MOTHER HAS MANIC DEPRESSION, IT DEVELOPED ABOUT 14 OR SO YEARS AGO WHEN HER HUSBAND ( MY FIANCES DAD ) ALMOST DIED, WENT INTO A COMA FOR A COUPLE WEEKS AND EVENTUALLY PULLED THROUGH. DURING THAT TIME HER MOTHER CHANGED FROM FUN LOVING HOSEWIFE AND MOTHER OF 3 TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON THAT TO THIS DAY DOESNT ACKNOWLEDGE HER CHILDREN, LIVES IN MY FIANCE'S GRANDPA'S BASEMENT IN HER BEDROOM AND HAS FOR THE PAST 14 YEARS GONE IN AND OUT OF A COUPLE CENTERS, AND BEEN ON MEDICINE A COUPLE TIMES, AND APPARENTLY EVERY TIME SHE GETS OUT STOPS THE MEDS, AND ITS BEEN 7 YEARS OF REAL FRUSTRATION FOR MY FIANCE, AND MYSELF. WE NOW HAVE 2 CHILDREN AND ARE NOT ONLY WORRIED ABOUT THEM BUT ALSO THE CHANCES OF MY FIANCE BEING AFFECTED ANY WORSE THAN SHE ALREADY HAS EITHER BY DEVELOPING THE ILLNESS OR NOT HAVING A MOTHER. SO FROM MY EXPERIENCE THE ILLNESS IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. "WE BOTH HAVE HEARD THAT UNLESS THE ILL PERSON HARMS THEMSELVES OR ANOTHER PERSON THERES NOTHING WE CAN DO IF SHE DOESNT WANT TO GET BETTER!!!!! IS THIS TRUE??? ANY SUGGESTIONS???undefined
