Hey everyone

Hello all,

I've posted a few threads a while back on the alcoholism board but as I'm currently coming off Doselupin I thought I'd put the occasional post on this board during the withdrawal period for support I guess.

I've been on a 75mg dose for a while, now successfully and happily cut down to 50mg. Now I'm alternating 50 and 25mg a day, on my fourth day of that now and feel a little strange. I'm DETERMINED to come off these things as I don't think they've really been beneficial to me overall and I have been on them for about 7 years (!) but this is where I've always faltered before, i.e. dropping below 50mg. I'm convinced this is not because I need them but because my brain is so adjusted to having the stuff that it doesn't like the change. But I will be better off without it I'm sure and just wanted to post that I'm really making the effort. It's going to be hard socially - most people around me don't know I'm on the things and will wonder why I'm suddenly a bit strange and detached (which is how I normally get basically...)

One of the issues - I'm finding it hard to concentrate on things (this message is going a bit fuzzy from time to time) and my motivation to do stuff is fluctuating wildly every couple of hours - I'll feel very motivated and active and great, then I'll feel kind of fuzzy and unfocussed and weird, maybe changing 2-3 times in the space of a morning. Anyone else find these things?

hope everyone's doing OK
Tommy

Tommy,
I thought Doselupin might be a product that's just not available here in the States or available under a different name, but I didn't get anything when I tried to search the Internet. Did you maybe misspell it? I'd love to help you out.
Love and hugs,
Eddie

Thanks for the correction eddie - the correct spelling is Dosulepin, also known (in the UK at least) as Dothiepin and Prothiaden. Actually, I don't think an exact equivalent does exist in the US as I lived there for a year while on it and had to bring several boxes with me! But it's basically one of the older tricyclic type antidepressants, like Elavil or Norpramin. I have also been on Citalopram (an SSRI) in the past and used Dothiepin to help me off it, but in turn that has become impossible to wean off in its own right...aagh! I know people's reactions to these things vary enormously but still, I think comparing notes would be helpful so thanks for your message.

ARE you sure? What does the prescribing physician think about you getting off the med? I always get concerned when folks want to get off their antidepressants. Would you rather be "strange and detached?" I mean, if the stuff is not causing you problems, why not stay on it? I'm not clear on why you think you'd be better off without it.

But if you are tapering off, you're right, your brain is going to be telling you need it because you have been on it for so long. Tapering slowly is part of the solution. The other part is just knowing that you ARE going to be a little off for a while and putting up with it. I wish you all the best whichever way you decide!

Love and hugs,
Eddie
