My Recovery from Doom Addiction - SoberRecovery : Alcoholism Drug Addiction Help and Information

Hi, my name is babystrangeloop and I'm a grateful recovering doom addict.

My dictionary defines "process addiction" as

1. There must be a "reward" that keeps me hooked.
2. I obsess on the "reward"
3. It destroys my life.

How I was hooked on doom.

1. Every day I'd scrape the news for something awful.
2. I'd share it.

Surprisingly I found there are people who make money doing this but I didn't want to make it a job as I'd have an even bigger problem.

One day I started to put the addiction and recovery model around my issues and I didn't go online about it. I got my bottom on a chair in a room.

Doom is the fad drug of choice it seems. It sure does sell, it sure does suck people in and keep em hooked.

It's like betting on a sure thing right? something awful is bound to happen sooner or later.

I thin Reader's Digest is the ultimate paradox, all those fun jokes and stories, stuffed between pages of paranoia and tragedy and DOOM

Reader's digest—how quaint. I do remember seeing them in doctor's offices years ago.

The only time I read the news on paper now is when I'm riding electric trains. We go into tunnels and it cuts off my twitter reception and there's always some rags lying around to leaf through. I like to start with the last page and go backwards since the least grim stuff is in the back of the ones that I find.

Let me tell you that there's been a doom gloom end of days almost every weeks, since I was born. And I'm over 50. Also when the economy is the worst, I find my best jobs.

Kiki, me too. I mean there always IS plenty of doom to go around, but there is plenty of good as well, wish that made the headlines too.

I'd love to see it "The World is NOT ending this year! Read all about it"

I admit I don't read papers, I live in a place with no tv or radio so I don't have to worry about filtering that out. Right now, attending to my own stuff is plenty enough, can't do much about saving the world, so I work on making my corner of it better for the folks around me.

My mother (80+) says "what is the world coming to? Have people all gone crazy?" and I am not sure if we are any crazier than we used to be, but it now gets funneled into our homes and minds at a rate never before possible. And maybe that fact alone makes us more crazy...I don't know, just musing.

I use to spend lots of time in the bowels of the internet, searching for the next, worst violence\death related stuff I could find... I was drawn to it like a drunk to a drink and it really kept my mind in that hopeless world where nothing good can happen. Instead of desensitizing me, it 'helped' in making me an angry yet anxiety riddle mess, when mixed with the hell of daily alcohol withdrawl I was practically afraid of my own shadow. I have tried my best to stay away from all that now and look for the good stories that are hidden in the bad.

Also, selling doom and gloom predictions is a money maker. People start buying all sorts of stuff.

In the end, if there was one day, where everything explodes, you'll need nothing, cuz nobody will be left to use it.

Only maybe the cockroaches will survive.

So why worry.

Ever seen the NatGeo show "Doomsday Preppers"? I watched (laughed through) half of one episode and turned it off. Just couldn't relate. The fact that sensationalized doom and gloom does not scare me, rather makes me laugh, may indicate I have an entirely different problem. Oh well...
