What causes hallucinations?

There are numerous medical and psychiatric causes of hallucinations. Some of the common causes include the following:

Stress. Prolonged or extreme stress can impede thought processes and trigger hallucinations.

Sleep deprivation and/or exhaustion.
Physical and emotional exhaustion can induce hallucinations by blurring the line between sleep and wakefulness.

Meditation and/or sensory deprivation. When the brain lacks external stimulation to form perceptions, it may compensate by referencing the memory and form hallucinatory perceptions. This condition is commonly found in blind and deaf individuals.

Electrical or neurochemical activity in the brain. A hallucinatory sensation--usually involving touch--called an aura, often appears before, and gives warning of, a migraine. Also, auras involving smell and touch (tactile) are known to warn of the onset of an epileptic attack.

Mental illness. Up to 75% of schizophrenic patients admitted for treatment report hallucinations.

Brain damage or disease. Lesions or injuries to the brain may alter brain function and produce hallucinations.

Hi Crazy,

My husband is not in recovery since he didn't have a problem with alcohol like I did. He is 72 and experiences Halucinations when he gets a low grade fever which leads to a lack of enough oxygen going to his brain due to lung infectioins.

I have a background of working in the medical & mental health field so am able to take care of him at home if we catch his fever soon enough to start the tylenol.

He has been in the hospital for this many times over the past eight years & seems to get more confused when he gets there. The last time the nurse restrained his one leg so he couldn't get out of bed....but that just made him angry and irritable.

I had told them the higher his fever goes, the more he halucinates...& the ordering him around when he can't understand what is going on makes everything worse.

They didn't give him anything for his fever in the ER until the doc called me at home because he did not know the past history of his hospitalizations....I told him that it should all be in his file...and at this time his fever was up to 102 degrees the doc told me.

He just had another episode last week & I kept him home...he did go see his doc the next day but didn't have to be hospitalized. This is a scary time for me and he seems to enjoy his escapades but does not want to be ordered around so I talk positive and put it in a way that he has come up with the idea & it works.
