| best job for people who recovering and whos suffer from depression
best professions for those who suffer from depression [Reply] [Set Notification On] Hi, I am a teacher and have had difficulty keeping my job. I have suffered from depression for 15 years as well as panic attacks. Anybody out there changed careers and found their new career it a better fit for someone with a mental illness as well as experiencing more job satisfaction I have done lots of vocational testing a read many books on the subject of careers. However, over the past few years I always get the same results for the career that suits my personality, interests, strengths (social work, teaching, priest, employment counsellor, coach, etc.) Many friends haves suggested library science since I love to read. I am concerned about career change since I am 48, married with two young kids. Thank You, Patk |

I am in recovery and have dealt with depression for many years. I've never had a career so to speak of as I've worked whatever jobs I could get to support two daughters as a single parent. However, I finally started college full-time last fall, and am going into the health information profession as a medical biller/coder/transcriptionist. I've already landed a part-time job at my local hospital and I love it! I am 51 years old.

well....i'm 33 and in your same situation. I've been a journalist and i wouldn't recommend that as a career change for depressives. i've started trying to do my photography and writing on my own, but after a year of pushing toward it...i'm still struggling. (i need the motivation of a daily job and deadline and have a hard time motivating myself to work at home). i think i might make a good therapist, but that requires a little more college than i think i can push myself thru this time around (barly made it thru my bachelor's because of the 1st major depression episode). What about tutoring? Being a teacher's sub? It really is hard to work with this illness which is why so many of us get approved for social security disability. my pdoc hasn't wanted me to apply for it for 2 years now, but for some reason i can't make myself do it....stubborn or stupid...one of the two.

| Best job for recovery/depression
Best of luck in your career search. I have also been considering a career change, since I was laid off several months ago. I considered teaching on a grade school level, but have mostly given up the idea; I can't imagine handling the job on one of my bad depression days. I think the best environment I was in was a job I had about ten years ago. It was a small company, with a lot of camaraderie. I also had my own office, which was key, and fairly regular hours. Whatever field you go into, I think you'll be in a really healthy place if you can find an office with an atmosphere like that. And don't worry about your age! Imagine how wonderful you'll feel once you've found a new career direction and are happier and healthier. |
