| An Indecent Proposal?
Hello everyone, My aunt died recently and her widower has sold her beloved horses in the South of France to our cousin, who is unable to look after them. He is very mentally ill and is barely able to function in society. He lives in a house on her estate and lives on his inheritance, as he is unable to work for a living. One of my cousines, his daughter, who lives on the estate came to me for help. She suggested to me to go there and take the horses when he is not looking and take them to a horse stable in the neighbourhood to a man, formerly employed by my aunt, so they will be taken care of. The horses might die or run away if they are kept with my cousin. We have been in a shock that the widower sold them to him and we cannot understand why he did such a thing. I called my sick cousin up and when he finally answered, he had forgotten he had the horses and had no idea where they were. He asked me to call the vet and get rid of them. I told him no, and then he said, "Well, then we won´t kill them." Crazy! I´ve loved these horses for years and have always gone horsebackriding when I visited. My cousine wants me to come with her and take the horses - by night. The question is really: Should I or shouldn´t I? I must admit, this appeals to my sense of adventure, but I don´t want to get in trouble with the law. Could there be another way? Maybe I should talk to the police and tell them about this, as it is impossible to reason with my cousin? They know him and have to deal with him on a daily basis for years. Quote:

Lilya, Maybe there are animal rescue groups like here in The USA that could help you. Do you have an equal to our SPCA ( society for the prevention of crulity to Animals)? Either way these beautiful animals should not suffer in any way. Please don't feel bad, just get them out of that situation. I think going in at night would be a very risky adventure for both you and the animals. Please let me know how you make out. Please, Please, don't wait. Don W

I think you should call the vet. and advise him of the situation, he can then evaluate their health. If it is poor he will make a report and you can file with humane society so they may proceed to take the horses from your cousin. I feel bad for these poor animals, they can go down very quickly. If this can not be done soon, call the police and ask that they intervene. Please keep us posted, Cindy |

oh Lilya!! Bless your heart!! Man, all I could suggest is talk to the police, see what they say..explain the situation and since they know and have dealt with your cousin...maybe they could "distract" your cousin?? So ya all could get the horses to a safe place? Maybe if they were there and were talking to him it would be easier on all involved. Let us know how it all works out, just don't take on more than you can handle ya know? I know this is very difficult in the arena of family and a feeling of responsibility to these horses. Good luck Lilya......

Thank you everyone, for your support.. I have dealt with the situation. I called up a retired Police officer who knows the family well and me from my juvenile days. We decided to do it this way: My cousine will tell my sick cousin that she will invite the horsestable-owner to let his grand-children go horsebackriding. Then he will not return the horses. My cousin will forget about them and the Police in the area will not do anything if he calls them (This is highly unlikely, as he is not even aware of them right now). It seems good! But taking them by night would have been more fun...:p Quote:

Everything is in place. We asked my sick cousin to lend the horses to the man who owns the stable near my Aunt´s estate. He has consented, but forgot it immediately. We will just take the horses by using plan B. The owner of the horse stables has the special van ready to transport the horses this evening. My cousine, who lives on my aunt´s estate will help him take the horses, which is good because they know her very well. My sick cousin, who owns the horses, is luckily always watching the planet Mars, which has never been so close to earth as you know, through a huge téléscope at night. When the horse rescuers phone me, I shall distract my sick cousin by phoning him from Paris to talk about the planet Mars. I just spoke to the authorities down there and the retired police officer. It should go well. Thanks for caring! I´ll let you know when it´s over. Quote:

Oh My God, it´s done! The horses are save! I spoke with my cousin about the planet Mars, and while he was distracted, my cousine and the man who owns the stables took them to safety! I feel like Robert Redford in "The Horse Whisperer". Well, I didn´t do much, but I´m really proud of this. Thanks you all for caring so much. :shades: Quote:
