| Voices
For a couple of weeks now I have been hearing voices in my head. Sometimes the voices are sweet; but now they're freaking me out. The voices usually just say my name, but there are so many different voices. I was diagnosed with Bipolar 11 years ago, and I've never had the voices. Occasionally I have had voices startle me when I'm first falling asleep. But this is much worse. Can voices be a symptom of Bipolar?

Hey Suzette, In my experience, voices are often a sign of schizophrenia-not usually associated with bi-polar.However, as I'm not a qualified Psych (yet) or a doctor-I strongly reccommend you go see your doctor and tell them this is happening. It can escalate and it would be good to get it treated now rather than later. | I'm not overly manic right now, in fact I've been kind of flat. Do these voices mean that a manic episode is on the way. I'm not asking for medical advise; only experience.

I hear voices when stressed but can never figure out what they say. I have PTSD and mild schizophrenia, the voices started following a major car accident where my head was cut open. The voices would make me go a little manic but I'm not bi-polar, Zprexa and Risperdal (not together) has helped to control the voices. Judy

Yes, a bipolar condition can cause hallucinations. I have also been hearing voices lately. I'm neither bipolar or schizophrenic, but it's within the bounds of my disorder too. I get them only when I'm under intense stress, and I take a low dose anti-psychotic that is supposed to help. Don't worry about it. Stress can cause it in even the most normal of persons. You should be able to get rid of them with medication or purely by changing your lifestyle/routines a bit. |

I'm bipolar 1 and I hear voices occasionally... I get psychosis on either end of my spectrum but sometimes when I'm stressed and not in an episode I hear them. If I'm not manic or depressed the voices are benign, and only happen under stress. Even with medication they happen. My psychiatrist has basically had me work on recognizing when it's happening and trying to figure out what's the stress behind it. All I can do is let it happen, really, and my psychiatrist thinks that as I get better at recognizing the cause, they will fade. And they have lessened a lot.

I am diagnosed BP and I hear voices. It is not clear conversation, more a sort of general buzz going on in my room. It is like there are lots of people there, moving around my room, talking to each other and laughing but I can't actually make out what they are saying. I can hear the room door open and close as they make their way in and out of my room. I have tried putting on headphones or earplugs, but they are still there. Sometimes I can cope with this, at others I can't. Sometimes, they feel really malevolent and I am sure they are going to 'get' me. I take quetiapine which does seem to lessen them Hippy x

I think talking with your doc is the best way to find out what is going on. Even normal people can hear voices. Till you see the doc write down as much about them as you can. Like when they happen. what they are saying. New meds are you eating and sleeping right. It's really important for your doc to have as much information about them as you can give.

Sassyslife: when I was on speed, I hallucinated all kinds of things. Not surprisingly, a lot of those went away when I stopped using. No more speed, no more Night People. TooMutch: my experience with voices is that they tend to crop up when I'm feeling more agitated than usual, manic or no, just under stress. Again, I'm not bipolar (to the best of my and my professional's opinions) but I am borderline, paranoid personality, ptsd, ocd, avoidant personality... etc. |

Hi Suz Just to give my experience for what it is worth. After a really stressful time, I heard voices when I fell asleep at night. I was not sleeping well and very run down and tired. I was also convinced that I could hear a distant radio playing - muffled voices, humming etc. - when I was at home. After seeing a specialist, it transpired that I was experiencing hypnagogic hallucinations. This sometimes happens at night when you fall asleep and your body is switching off and shutting down. I also heard door bells ringing, footsteps running up and down stairs. If I was really tired at the end of the day, it would happen then. I did take medication, but stopped when I was trying to concieve. I don't know if this relates to you or helps, but it might be something to consider if you have been really tired and run down recently. I know you have said you have had some problems with restless legs recently stopping you sleep. Look after yourself gorgeous lady! Love B x |
