| Gender Politics - The wussification of men
It seems like most TV shows and advertisments now are aimed at degrading the American male. The sitcoms have made the man to be stupid, immature, and careless. The woman is always the strong one. On TV ads when there is a man and a woman together almost every single time it seems the woman is the stronger, and smarter one. The man is always being shown as the loser of the two. If you get a TV show where a woman bosses men around, she is a strong woman who should be praised. If a man does the same thing he is a bully and a jerk. And because I am complaining about it I am "insecure, sexist and old fashioned." Yet if a woman does the same thing she is surpressed and is strong for fighting against it. It is almost a crime to be a guy these days.

^ As far as the TV Shows...this has been going on in many (most?) shows at least since the 70's. The man is stupid and inept, and that is part of why the show is supposed to be funny. That said, there are exceptions, and there are many examples where the man is probably portrayed as the better of the two. I don't disagree with anything you wrote. I just don't get worked up about it. IMHO...it doesn't really hurt me, or affect me negatively. Though I wouldn't blame someone for getting upset about it. I think the bigger issue is definitely the wussifying of men, which I do think is happening. Though, most the females in my life don't want this to happen. I think it may be a pendulum and swing back.

Myself, I do not even watch television anymore. It seems as if it is all geared at tearing down traditional values and promoting dysfunctional behavior. I have been 138 days alcohol free, 19 days nicotine free, and approx. 8 months television free. (I wish I knew my television sobriety date, have to try and figure out the day I cut off the cable, the ironic part would be that the last show I watched was 2-1/2 men, lol.) |

I like the idea of not watching telly better than actually not watching! I watch many different shows, from BBC news to "The Real Housewives" (all of them!) I also enjoy PBS, mostly "Mystery!" And I'm not above watching "Project Runway" either! To the thread's point, yes, it looks like men are an easy target. Especially white men, as they are portrayed. None of it bothers me, and I am a straight, white man. I have noticed that middle-aged men, of all colours and races, tend to be laughed at and made the butt of jokes! |

^ It's all up to taste. There are a lot of shows I like. I DVR The Ultimate Fighter, Tosh, Sunny in Philadelphia and other shows including Judge Judy. I also like the documentary shows about murder. There are a couple cool Military shows, one is called - Surviving the Cut and the other is One Man Army. Both cool. Mr. Silver - I saw your other Post about loving October and Halloween and Horror movies. This is my favorite time of the year too. When you going to post some Horror movies in the movies Thread here in the Men's area? I love Horror movies any time of the year, but especially now.

Mr S As an old guy, I was just lucky to have never watched TV ( a little for a couple years , here and there ) Just the other day, I've finally decided to stop by the cable co. to get mine disconnected. The reason it ever got connected in the first place, was when I had room mates for a year ......and when they never stopped by to disconnect it; I ended up watching some sports. Way too much to do , not nearly enough time .......to waste. When I'm 70, it'll be a great (new) thing to have !?! |

A few people have told me that a book is a much better investment of your time and money. It depends on personal view. When I think about it though, the people I know who read a lot are also the most successful and most well educated. The people I know who do little or no reading are usually struggling with money and are not well informed on many issues. Maybe that is not a common experience, but it appears there is a high correlation between people who do a lot of reading and are doing well. The people who don't read are usually drinking, smoking weed, playing xbox, and watching Jersey Shore. The people who are reading are working better jobs, come across as smarter, and have healthier personal relations. It also seems like they are not as easily manipulated and make better life decisions. Again...this is not in all cases, or meant to be some scientific research. It is just a generalized observation based on my experiences.

This would not be as upsetting and dangerous if it were not that women also dominated politics and business. With women filling the White House, Senate and the board rooms of this nation, it just unbalances everything to have them in power on TV programs as well. Maybe when we have a male president and the majority of our legislators and CEOs are men as well---then we can let women dominate fictional men on sitcoms. |
