| Psalm 118:24 | 'Three Stooges' coming together at MGM Wed Mar 25, 2009, 02:54 PM ET • Source: Hollywood Reporter (WireImage.com/Sony Pictures)Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk. MGM and the Farrelly brothers are finally slapping together their high-profile cast for "The Three Stooges," a comedy project the filmmakers have been developing for years. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, and Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly. Benicio del Toro is a rumored possibility for the brothers' taciturn leader, Moe. The studio is looking to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot. The project was originally set up at Columbia, which produced the 1930s Stooges shorts. C3 Entertainment Inc., which holds the licensing rights to the Stooges brand, then sold the feature rights to Warner Bros. in 2001 for the Farrellys to write and produce the movie. Eventually, Warner Bros. let the rights lapse and MGM's Mary Parent scooped them up along with the Farrellys' continuing participation. Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote the script, which Bobby has referenced as "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest," and will produce with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler. Earl and Robert Benjamin of C3 will executive produce. The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges' gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu. Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some "Benjamin Button"-style visual trickery to place the adult actors' heads on child actors' bodies. The Stooges maintain remarkably global brand recognition, and their shorts, films and cartoons are still broadcast in 30 countries. The Farrelly brothers' latest comedy "The Heartbreak Kid" grossed $124 million worldwide. Penn is repped by CAA, Carrey by CAA and the Miller Co. Hasn't been a guy I know back in the day that, didn't hurry to take their date home on a Sat. night so, they could sit and watch the Stooges. Crossing my fingers, this will be a gut buster. Good Lord knows, we can all use a laugh

I hope it's good, too, but I'm kinda skeptical. I love the stooges!

Not sure how Benicio del Toro will be playing Moe. Anyone see him in No Country for old men? He gave new meaning to the word bad guy

LOL If, Benicio del Toro is as mean as he was in No Country For Old Men, the movie will quickly be the 1 stooge!!!

Nope...it was Sean. His role as Jeff Spicoli(sp) launched his career. It's true...look it up.

BTW - Benicio del Turo wasn't in No Country for Old Men. You're thinking of Javier Bardem as Anton. It's true...look it up.

I never have a closed mind to anything. Sometimes, I've liked sequels to movies better then the first one.

I'm siding with SonofaMess in the skeptical camp. I've been a stoogies fan for decades and decades. At least two hours each weekday in college (the 70s) was spent in the frat house watching the stoogies (boo! to Shemp and Curley Joe), drinking and partying. As I've passed 50, I see the Three Stooges as innovators in physical comedy. Just look at any avant garde comedy movie and you'll find many of its roots in their old stuff (also, lots from the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, and others, but I've never found them as good...). I'm afraid that a remake would end up being the Farrelly's take on the Farrelly's and others' take on the Stoogies -- and correspondingly lame and unoriginal. But, as good alkies, we can always hope! |

I'll reserve any type of comment until, I see a preview and or, hear what you guys say. LOL We used to drop our dates off just so we could all come back to my place and watch the stooges. Oh, every Sunday, we had to watch Monty Python on PBS

Ah, Captain, you bring back fond memories. We used to rush our fraternity house meetings on Sunday night so we could all crowd into one brother's room -- a small single with about 20 people packed in -- to watch Python on a small black-and-white television with aluminum foil configured just-so to get a decent signal...
