Building a website/forum

ok, in my spare time I play the World of Warcraft video game. [Anyone else here play?] In fact, I'm a Guild Master. Horde for the win!

Anyway, I really need to set up a website and forum. I've use guildportal some but I want more. I also, unrelated to Warcraft, have often thought about registering my own domain for my own personal use. Hosting pics, maybe a journal, things like that. Can I do both at the same time?

I have in the past done a little bit of website editing using Frontpage. But that was taping into an existing site and just making changes for the most part.

So what I'm looking to do is have a place where I can host a website (a domain, right?), have forums set up (pretty much just like here), and be able to host/show images.

I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Do I just go to someone like GoDaddy to start with? I've looked a little at phpBB. Is that the same or different from vBulletin? Do I need to learn about MySQL? I'm kind of lost here. I get confused even trying to figure out a myspace! lol

So as I said, I want a Warcraft place but also a place a personal place unrelated to gaming. If I need to work those two issues separately I will. Warcraft forums are the priority now.

I'm willing to do the work but I need someone I can rely on to guide me a bit (ok, maybe a lot!). Someone that won't throttle me when I ask questions over and over.

How do I get started? What software do I need to buy?

Please help this confused 41 year old out!

Proboards.com!! I use it for my discussion board. It works very similar to this one and it's free. You can post pics and youtube videos too.
You will create a board name and your board will be called "Yourboardname.proboards.com"

I suggested proboards also Pinkcuda - and to experiment with a phpBB forum as an aside just to learn the ropes, as phpBB can be tricky for a complete novice but is pretty satisfying if you have the time to put into it.

Although installing the forum itself is pretty easy, it's all the fine tuning that can be frustrating and time consuming.

It all depends on what the website is going to be about.. Flash is really no good anymore though.

Let me know what kind of website you want to make and I can point yo in the right direction.

It isn't? Somehow I missed that memo. What has replaced it?
