if you exercise, how?

have to admit i rarely do. I get home at night around 930 from standing all day and i do nothing most of the time. One or two days a week at the very best i do something resembling exercise.

even i though have 3 forms of exercise i have found that i actually do like. I'm just hoping for your list, and specifically what you do, "i do weight lifting", yeah? what exercises on what days? Anyway just hoping to hear some good details and where you found out about them also if you remember.

heres mine when i do something. I only have three forms of exercises these days.

1. walking, sometimes bike riding.

2. stretching- i'd list the name of every exercise i do if i knew the names of them. I picked up a lot from gym class, picked some up from when i was working in a factory, they had us do exercises before our shift together, but especially i use a illustrated book by bob anderson called stretching. Just really helps with that inner tension. Usually do stomach curls on those days too.

3. weight training- I learned my workout from golds gym weight training book. Its fairly ancient for an exercise book, came out in 1981. these are the exercises i do when i do them.
leg extensions
leg curls
squats
calf raises
bench press
shoulder press
upright rowing
bent rowing
deadlifts
arm curls
tricep curls
lateral raises
wrist curls

anyway thanks to anyone who responds.

Used to train a lot of boxing/thaiboxing. That's a pretty insane workout. Lately I've just been doing some weights and walking around. I don't really care too much right now about getting huge, I just like having muscle and feeling like I am doing something. Dunno what I really want out of fitness right now.

I have a pair of Reebok dumbbells I keep by my bed, and one stays on my computer chair. Since my usual wakeup routine is to wake up, throw eyedrops in my eyes and sit at the computer, you have to do something with that dumbbell. I've learned to do some sets with it every morning and night, along with working out in general when I can. More cardio than anything since I don't have much in the terms of sports equipment (I have a bowflex, dumbbells and a stationary bike). It's a pain at first to start exercising, especially when I first woke up, but now its like my morning stimulus. No coffee needed, just do sets with the dumbbells.

Good luck finding something that works for ya man!

I do cardio 5 times a week - just running on a treadmill after work for about 30 minutes - as well as in the morning sometimes as well to get the metabolism going if I wake up early enough. I also do strength training twice a week too, Mondays and Fridays. Friday nights at the gym is great because its usually pretty quiet and i have the free weight room all to myself, whereas when I was drinking Friday nights was spent in a haze.

I do weight training and cardio about three times a week. I do Tai Chi on my off days. Here is something that someone suggested that has really helped me -- I do four weeks on and one week off. I do my exercise for four weeks in a row and then during the fifth week I take a break. I can exercise a little, or not at all. But at the end of the fifth week then I get back into the routine and start week one again. The cycle of one week off after four weeks on has really helped me, because then exercise doesn't seem like this endless drudgery without end.

I try to do two 20 minute sessions on an elliptical trainer every day. One in the morning and one at night. But I've heard that variety is good, so some nights I'll do a work-out with a body ball and crunches instead of the trainer.

On weekends I'm sometimes able to get a bicycle ride or hiking in.

Can't say I've lost a lot of weight in the last year, but my body fat sure has gone down and I look much better than I did in my first two years of sobriety!

Weight training. Looking to get into competitive powerlifting eventually. Also did a little kickboxing as a kid and keep a heavybag hanging up outside to do some cardio work on or use the stationary bike which I hate. Always feel like I'm on a human hamster wheel with those!

I play ice hockey 2 days per week (actual games) - still 'competetive' somewhat, so that's a good workout.

I have 2 resting days per week (usually Wednesday and Saturday) - M, T,TH,F - gym workouts (very repetitive):
20 minutes warmup on stationary bike, then weights for 35 minutes (alternate days from chest/legs to shoulders/back). Eliptical for 15 minutes - then abdominals and arms (curls, presses) then 12 minutes 'cool down' on eliptical or bike depending on whether or not I do leg presses that day.

Never lift really heavy - more reps than max outs.

In the summer I surf as much as I can - I will substitute out my gym workout on days I surf (and I always go on Saturday morning, sunrise). I would just as soon play hockey 4 days a week and surf 3 or 5 days a week - but it's just not practical...so I am glad the gym is there.

I just started a walking program three weeks ago. Afterwork everyday, instead of taking the bus to where I catch my train home, I walk this nice jogging/biking trail that goes by my work down to the train station. It's about two-and-a-quarter miles (3.5km).

Hoping to get back to doing some weight training soon. Need some toning before I hit a beach.

i used to exercise three times a week for 6 hours in gym and taekwondon and then jog on the weekends,,,now i find that i dont have the rage to fuel me i cant get into taekwondo so much and just go to the gym more for health then for hot abs etc, prob go once or twice a week but really still love to go for jog on nearby oval and push ups etc. find its the best thing to get me motivated just to sort of pray and force myself sometimes...need to take my music with me to pump up the motivation tho.

You all make me feel like I'm not trying.. I just get on an exercise bike for half an hour a day while watching anime. Then again my gym's miles away and I have no transport... by the time I've walked there I've exercised enough!

Talking

Log onto crossfit.com. I am in the U.S.N. Riverine forces and it is the main fitness format we use. Real intense but not long on time. Go under the faq section for workouts and descriptions. They post a workout of the day and have a support forum much like this one. I have dropped twenty pounds in the last four months being sober and using crossfit. Being in 125 degree Iraqi heat hasn't hurt either. Good luck with the workouts.

I play tennis twice a week, and rock climb (usually in a gym) three times a week. Then there's a trail up a hill close to my house-- couple'a mile hike, with a terrific view. I try to do that once a week as well.

I've had to adopt forms of exercise as part of a lifestyle-- I'd never exercise if it was just "go to the gym and lift. go to the gym and run" etc.

I usually run for about an hour day, before getting ready for work, I used to do weights before I quit working at the gym, now I work in a factory and haul around metal during the day, which- as it turns out- also has weight. Other than that, I play soccer, basketball, and go to a boxing gym with friends on occasion. Mostly just run around and stay busy, and try to keep from sitting around on my ass too much.

Hey Duders, this is my first trip to the Men's only section..

I bicycle as much as I can. I live 7 miles from work, and ride my bike four days a week. I just bought a single speed commuter bike to make the ride a little harder. The hills kill me since I'm hovering around 260 lbs..

I have also been recording various sporting shows. Tour de France, Olympics etc.. I plan to watch these during the winter while I am on my eliptical machine..

HeavyJ,

If you have the energy do some push-ups and sit-ups after you get home to get some muscle work as well as the cardio from the bike. The more muscle you have the more calories your body will burn while resting. Worked great for me until I got in good enough shape to do some of the cross-fit workouts I mentioned in another post. Good luck with everything man.

If you are up to it check out navyseals.com and look at the workout of the day. You can scale them to your ability. Some are crazy but most just are basic movements we did in school. I started them a few months ago and dropped twenty pounds. Crossfit.com is really good as well. Same principals as the seals stuff. The faq section with answer all questions you might have. Your core will shape up quickly. Good luck.

Sounds good dude, stay strong. The workouts are tough but they will get you there. I did one yesterday and just woke up feeling a bit tight and stiff. However it is a far better feeling than waking up and feeling like my skull is split open. The great thing is most workouts don't require any equipment, just your body. This makes it possible to workout everyday without really over training. Have fun man, you will love the new you. Stay strong dude.

I do Yoga 2 times a week (yes YOGA) I have found that if I hit a meeting then Yoga most of the time the theme of the meeting is also in the Yoga studio. Not only that w/ no wife, booze, and Yoga I am more healthy than I have ever been (dropped 45lbs in 7 months).

Every other week I go Rock Climbing (YAY GOD) yet again it helps me learn to trust GOD and myself like never before.

As a former Speed freak (5 years without) and no drama from drinking it's good to have the adrenalin from the climbing and the serenity / workout of the YOGA studio (also helping with keeping in 11)

I would suggest YOGA to everyone the studion I go to now has at least 5 of the fellowship on Thursday nights it's a physical, spiritual, and psychological approach to self wellness, NOT TO MENTION THE VIEW IS AMAZING
