| Any Mechanics in the house?
I have a 92 Honda accord, noticed fluid coming from the front of the car, it is on the hood etc. when I parked the fan kept going abut quit after a minute or so. I checked the fluids and oil is OK but looked in radiator and it looked a little low so I added fluid, but when I was filling it I noticed the fluid coming from the top of radiator or it looked that way. I know nothing about cars and I am hoping it isn't serious. Any Ideas?

Try looking to figure out what the fluid is. If it is from the radiator, you would need replace it. There is an overflow on the radiator and when you fill it, you could be seeing what leaks from there as well. The fan is an electrical fan. It will turn on and run as needed. The car does not need be running for the fan to continue running. When the radiator cools, the fan turns off. Fill when cool or fill with the engine running and only fill the overflow bottle. *do not open a hot radiator cap* If you run into a problem of overheating...turn on your heat and the blower fan full speed and get off the road as soon as you can to check things out.

I'm turning this over the my Son for a moment. Works at a care repair chain and going to auto mechanics school. Here's the kid! when your car leaks again...check and see what color it is!! if its black, its oil!! if its a reddish color, its transmission fluid!! if its clear, its water from the air conditioning!! if its green or you cant tell...stick your finger in it and smell it!! if theres no smell then its water from the a/c! but if there is a smell to it, its antifreeze and you either have a hole in your radiator or you have a bad water pump!! i had a similar problem on my pontiac grand am and it turned out it was the water pump!! its not too expensive for a water pump, it just depends on the size of engine you have!! if you have anymore questions, just let my mom know and she will inform me!!

from the reseach I have done and from asking I am pretty sure it is either water pump or radiator, thanks for all the replies. One guy said I had cracked the block but I am pretty sure if I did that the car wouldnt run. anyway thanks again.

A cracked block is the worst case scenario, and if the guy knows anything, he knows not to start there. A cracked block is possible, but unlikely. Is he a salesman of some kind? LOL-In the words of Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon". Anyway, start looking at the easy stuff first. Radiator/heater hoses with a pin hole leak. Radiator itself leaking. Radiator cap. Overflow tube. A water pump is possible. Hoses are easy to change. Radiators can often be repaired. If the car is over heating and it's leaking from the overflow tube, check the cap and thermostat. |

Wait for a situation where it will leak, a radiator leaks usually directly underneath it so it's pretty easy to tell it's that. The water pump is possible but that will be much further to the rear of the radiator coming out the side of the engine. Plus, do it yourself. I'm not sure about an accord but it will be similar to my civic that I recently did the radiator one and it was literally 2 hose clamps, draining the old fluid in the pan from the bottom of the radiator, and four 10mm bolts that had to be removed for the fan and mount to take it out. It literally took me all of 15 minutes to do the job start to finish and it doesn't require a jack or anything real special. |
