| ~Flower Best for NE~
Hey anybody tell me the best flowers to plant for say central PA? I am determined to do something with my poor yard this year....and if I do have to sell this place before it is foreclosed I figure it would help to have some landscaping done...and it would cheer me up watching them bloom. I am quite dumb when it comes to planting anything beyond some sunflower seeds or wildflower mix...... Any ideas appreciated. I imagine some seeds will need to be planted soon?

im UK so not much help, but I like pots! you can grow anything in pots and cater to their needs for example buy special soil or feeds for them...you can also take them with you when you go!!! shrubs such as fushias look nice and bear up well to the novice gardener, seeds and stuff should be planted about now, but over here they may as well stay asleep its bloody snowing outside again, after yesterday where there was a heat haze its a shock to the system! where is spring anyway??? Also I am always sure to look for 'hardy' on the lable! love Purrdyxxx |

Annuals bought at a garden center would be nice. You can see what they look like before planting and put out as many as you want to fill a space. I have very expensive taste so my ideas of what should be planted will cost you a bundle *LOL* If you want plants that will return year after year, there are some wonderful perinnials that you could use. A local garden center will most likely be selling only plants that do well for the local area. I love honey suckles filling a chain link fence or for annuals, morning glories can fill a fence very nice as well. Just so many it ends up becomeing a matter of what you like. Fushia are expensive and would grow as annuals in the NE for summer but they happen to be one of my favorites. Maybe Don S will be around and answer your question. He is a plant man with current knowledge. I have been out of school and the business for a very long time.

I think is what she called it...LOL...... I like the idea of potted plants! hardy.....will look for that label myself................lol.........

Yeah, I like potted plants too. Especially Gerber daisies. They are very pretty in pots. Like Best said, the best thing to do would be to go to Home Depot or Lowe's or some hardware/gardening center. They should only carry things that will grow well in your area. Maybe get a lot of green foilage that will come back every year and then some flowers here and there to add color. I can't wait until it is time to plant TOMATOES!!!!!!! xoxoxoxo Ang |

Tomatoes!!! yes, yes yes.....I think I will get a bunch of tomato plants. Couple years ago we had a few we bought at an Amish stand...they seemed to do okay. I remember as a kid my mom always planted lettuce..and it tasted so much better than any I have bought at the store. In fact lettuce from the store doesn't really have any taste. Will maybe try to plant some lettuce also..is it time for lettuce to be planted?

Okay, another question for you guys. I have some flyers here came with the coupon clippers about 'Dwarf Apple Trees" They seem reasonably priced......has anyone ever planted them? Two of em for $8.00 seems like a great deal. The kids would absolutely love it. I also have a flyer here for 'reblooming lilac'....I think I would like to try that also. Lilacs and honeysuckles...reminds of my dear grandmothers house.

I don't know much about apple trees or lilacs. Someone more experienced will come along in a bit I am sure. I do love honeysuckles. I just thought of something else. Something I like to grow from seed. It is really easy and grows like crazy. It is called Hummingbird Vine. It is pretty and like I said, grows like crazy. xoxoxoxo Ang |

The Gerber daisy's would be great!!! Make nice flower arrangements, I think. If I had the money I would have fresh flowers in my house every day! I am sooo happy it is about spring. We are having a cold spell here this week, but the sun is out, the sky is blue.........and I know it will be warm in no time..... I hated in Texas that there wasn't really any spring...that and I lived on 10 acres with not even a bush!! NO mountains, no bushes...just prairie land....lived on a lil mobile home right in the middle of a field...ughhh!! I am ecstatic now to be able to look out my windows and see the mountains...and have autumn, and spring..and yes, even the snow is alright. The kids beg for snow all winter long, hoping to get out of school..lol....they didn't really have any snow days in TX! I don't miss the Texas weather or scenery so much....but I would die to be able to eat at a good Mexican restaurant again..............our only one closed about two years ago...Chi-Chi's.... but I would soooo love to eat at Pancho's or El Chico.......mmmmmm....

Both lilac and apple trees will take a bit before they flower or give fruit. Lilac don't flower till they reach a certain size and the apple trees may take a few years before they are big enough that they give any fruit as well. Both would do well in your area. Lettuce can go out now in your area I am thinking. May want to ask at a garden center and use hot caps over them for the first month. (wax paper round tents) When looking for tomatos, early, mid, and late varieties are out there. Beefeaters planted in June won't give you tomatos till Sept. Early varieties will start giving you tomatos in July.

Hey Best, do you know of anything to edge flowerbeds with. Besides, that ugly black plastic stuff. Number one, that is ugly and number two, it is a bear to edge in. Everytime it rains really hard, my flower bed in the back, spills dirt all over on my sidewalks. TIA xoxoxo Ang |

Broccoli and lettuce are hardy plants. They can live through a light frost. A heavy frost, they would be ok under hot caps. In May they shouldn't have any trouble at all. March is a little on the cold side yet but with hotcaps they should do fine.

I can't wait to get started in the yard! Am going to take 'before' and 'after' pictures and maybe I can learn also how to post the the pics on here. I can't spend a whole lot of money on this gardening business but I think a little bit will be a very worthwhile investment. Most people here in my town keep their yards soooo beautiful...it really is a treat to drive around and look at them. Thanks guys for all the info.

Yes, do take before and after pics. I will help you learn to post them. Also, something else I like to grow in pots, is parsley. I personally love to eat the stuff ( I know I am weird). But even if you don't eat it, it makes a lovely garnish for food. xoxoxoxo Ang

We have red brick paths...but another thing we did when we first moved in was use old fashioned clay drain pipes, dig hole so half of them are sticking out of the ground (sort of alternate them in length) and plant wild straberries or thyme in them...looked really pretty and olde worlde if you get my drift.. we also laid an old red brick path and put in one of those old fashioned water pumps whcih pumps the rainwater to the garden where we can water the toms and green beans in the summer! oooh yes this is getting me all excited! we have hardy fushias whcih come up every year....!!! I like them so much the varety and everlasting blooms! they just keep coming! very pretty.......

Tam, I dont know about your area of course, but if spring is in tha air, you could use cuttings "borrowed" from people while you are walking, or in fact 'donated" by peeps! LOL I love geraniums, and pelergoniums, both of which grow well by cuttig, and are very hardy and prolific flowerers Spring bulbs are wonderful, but only flower once a year HUGX Lee
