Tempur-Pedic -- sorry if it's off topic...

I am a low back pain sufferer.... guess it's not an off topic subject, as this was one of my great excuses to consume copious amounts of beer in the past.

I am finally at a point (maybe I've hit my "pain" bottom) where I truly need to do something about my bed. I have been through Physical Therapy, exercise almost every day, and the final missing link is my bed -- I wake up in pain every morning, some nights I don't sleep much at all -- or wake up 10-20 times over the course of a night...

I am considering a Tempur-Pedic mattress set, and am wondering if anyone has had good/bad experiences with it.... OR if anyone has a spectacular bed they just love....

Guess I'm sick and tired -- of being tired....

Thanks,

ken

Ken, as sometime low back pain sufferer...I highly recommend Stearns and Foster mattresses. They are more expensive than most, and worth every damn penny. Those Tempur-Pedic thingys look tres cool. I want to hear about it if you get one.

I have Back pain problems and got the select comfort. It was great the first couple years but their box has made it very uncomfortable. never buy a box that can be torn apsrt to ship.
I will give it one thing though it is really easy on the back when you take it apart and move it.

I use to get pain in my lower back all the time...
then I switched to plain foam mattresses...
now.. my back only gives me the devil when I stay in it for too long..

Any exchange guarantees on that bed Ken..??

NoMo,

There's a website, www.epinions.com, where consumers review every imaginable product. I'll bet you could get some good info on Tempur-pedic (and other mattresses) there.

I have a lower back problem too. For me the more firm the better, so I have a really thin mattress *think futon* that I have on my floor. I'm pretty sure that I could find a stiff mattress, but this was an extremely cheap alternative (about $50). One of these days I might have to find a good mattress so I can sleep in bed with my hubby again! Good luck finding a bed that works for you.

Ken,
I suffered lower back pain for many years. It has cleared up just about completely since I lost about 60 pounds. I know that you are pretty fit and are probably unable to adopt that course of action so I will tell you what I used to do which was to take voltarol regularly to reduce the inflammation around the problem area. The drug, an anti-inflammatory, worked remarkably well.
On the matter of beds I can recommend what we in the UK call pocketed spring mattresses. These beds are made up of a large number of individual coil springs each encased in its own cloth pocket. The effect of this type of construction is that the mattress is able to handle the weight of your body most effectively with each spring working independently. I recommend you try one out in the store, they are quite different to more modern springing systems which are often designed for cheapness of construction rather than support.

Somebody told me that the Tempur was around $10K. It better be good for that price.

NoMo,
I also suffered from low back pain, and my husband has 2 lumbar slipped discs, and one herniated disc. So...last Spring, we bought a new mattress, a REAL FIRM one. Well, it was like sleeping on the floor.

SO...I went out to Kohl's and bought a memory foam topper, it's about 1 1/2 inch thick, and I LOVE IT! I can sleep comfortably without any back pain at all.

Plus, it only cost about $70 bucks for a king size bed.

Cheaper than the tempur pedic.

Let us know what you decide.

good luck.

Two friends have back pain and have the Tempurpedic and swear by them.
I was going to get one but felt it was too soft for me. So the salesman at the store showed me a "knock off" that they claimed was as good or better and had a firmer feel to it. It was also about 20% less.
Also when I was in the store looking at the "knock off" the salesman referenced something about it not being as hot, evidently there was some buzz that the older tempurpedic matteress was too hot/retained heat?

I would recommend the pillows for sure, they are shaped for your head and neck, but I ended up sleeping on the flat side and would have a very hard time with a regular pillow, no going back.
Try the pillow, it may give you a good idea of what the bed is going to be like.
Good luck getting some sleep.

WE HAVE ONE!!! And yes it IS all it's cracked up to be! We got the 3" thick mattress topper (not tempur - just memory foam) honestly I can't see what would be gained above that by having the whole mattress.

Don't get tempur though it's DEAD expensive - do a search on ebay for memory foam.

My biggest problem was that D cuddles me to sleep but often falls asleep first and he goes like a dead man - leaving me rather squashed! The mattress means I sink in and it supports his spare bits of leg etc so I don't get the whole weight. D wanted it because his neck has really played up before (torticollis) and he does get some back problems - he loves it too!

Our topper cost £114 ($200 ish) including postage from ebay - much better than the £1000 ($1700)+ for tempur and I don't care if it's the same as tempur, it IS memory foam and works, that's good enough for us!

Okay - Day 3 report from our new topper!!

Maybe we should have got the 2" version 'cos the fitted sheets don't fit no more - it looks like the bed has ate all the pies!!

Another serious complaint is that I SO don't want to get up in the mornings anymore - I'm laying there knowing it's THE physical comfort highlight of the day, knowing I've slept well, feel refreshed and am being coddled by a mattress topper (+D on occassion). D is missing his early morning cups of coffee as I used to leave the bed as soon as I woke. I've gone years without ever wanting to lie - in now I don't want to get up. THESE CONTRAPTIONS SHOULD HAVE WARNING LABELS!!

Not that I'm sending it back, not ever, never, nope.

Oh and I've ALWAYS had two pillows - now one is neough and two just get in the way!

Sorry Gabe - but you just HAVE to get one, then give up work and retire to fully enjoy it!

Ebay - ebay - ebay!!

We got ours instead of buying each other presents for chrimbo - then failed to wait till Xmas eve as was planned! It's also NOT Tempur and about 10% of Tempur prices.

I command ye to go fourth to the land of many auctions and speak there of memory foam as your quest, but forget not to use the word topper. By the miracle of the guardian geeks hand - BEHOLD there shall appear budget solutions for unfortunate foamless ones.

By the power invested in me as a supreme bargain hunter of flea markets and auction rooms, I beseach thee to search heartely and without heed to impatience for your desired object.

Yeah Equus,
I'm loving mine too! We bought ours at Kohls, it was on sale, I think we only paid, maybe $100 for it, it was on sale too. It was about 2 inches I think, but it squished down pretty good, but the sheets are a challenge.
Ours came with a cover for it too, a nice velour cover.

It truly is comfortable, conforms to the body really good. Although I have the same problem as you, when I wake up, I lie there awhile, because I'm SO comfortable.

Doncha just love technology?
