Question TOPIC: Remember Mom's Cooking? What Was Your Favorite Dish?

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic
here in Baton Rouge, La.

I was in the kitchen cooking
a dish that my mom use to
cook often when i was young.

I remember lots of things she
use to cook and took those
to memory and make them
from time to time.

Do you remember your moms
cooking? What was ur favorite
dish she cooked for you that
u liked so well?

I made Lentil soup today and added
lots of seasoning and cubed
ham....as a child we ate this over
rice...a good hardy meal that would
stick to ur ribs.

I had salad with just a bowl of
lentil soup, no rice. Have to watch
the carbs today.... bummer...

Pierogies, the best I've ever had. Mom was a Pole through and through, she made great stuffed cabbage and borscht too.

my momma, God love her didnt really get the cooking nack until I was a teenager but oh my, her meatloaf anf mashed potatoes were something I'd give and arm for especially when she made home made bread....................

now we dont eat any of her fugde, she made some for my brother who was stationed over in Iraq during the first gulf, she sent him a HUGE box of it, they tell you not to send stuff like that because it melts after all it is like 117 in the shade.........not only did it get there it arrived not melted, my brother knowing about my mommas cooking gave it away there was enough there for his whole berricks............next day all but 3 were at the infermory..............momma got a very polite call that afternoon asking that she refrain from sending goodies any more.................we will always laugh about that now.............lol

Oh, I remember Mom's cooking alright!

To be honest, my brother, sister and I were always happy when Dad stepped into the kitchen and told Mom to take a day off!

I could go on and on about my grams cooking. I am the only addict to gain 100 lbs in the worst of my addiction. All because I have a grams that makes sure I am fed.

My fav is her quiche.
She makes this chicken broccoli and cheese caserole thing.
Any and everythign she makes rocks.
I love her bread stuffing too. I dont much care for stove top or that crouton stuffing. I will only eat bread stuffing.
Her gravy is to die for. Just everything.
She is a grill master too.

I second wldkatz....my ma's meatloaf and mashed potatoes...man they're good. Simple and to the point, just the way I like it.

My wife is not so bad at making that herself by the way.

I'm hungry.

Growing up in a small town and having
a grandfather that plows a huge garden
yr. round, we learned to eat fresh veggies
and foods that stick to ur ribs...

Back then before we even thought about
healthy eating, everything was fried....no
holding back....fried chicken, pork chops,
beans and rice, pasta, bread.....

Italian families love to eat and thus carry
huge cabbooses ....

Today i dont fry anything....i still love
my beans but no rice.....little to no
bread.....bummer...lol

Stuffed Cabbage!!
I used to gorge myself and almost explode. Some of neighbors freaked over the sauerkraut but I love it really sour. I even got Mom's recipe and learned how to roll the cabbage. Now that she is in her 80's and I make it for her but it never is as good as hers. Kinda like doing a mini amend. LOL

stacked on each other around
a pot with little liquid to steam...

Wait...my spouse has a steamer
i could use....yes, thats it....sweet..!

I bought 2 bags, one with fajita beef
and the other chicken and some wheat
brand soft tortillas. Add some salsa,
cheese and lettuce/tomatoes....yum

Sharon,
I have had so many different versions of stuffed cabbage and cabbage rolls made by different people in so many different ways. Never had one I didn't like! I like to make homemade rye bread and mashed potatoes to go with them. Even my daughters who were the all very picky eaters loved it. Ground pork mixed with ground beef adds a lot of flavor. I eat a pretty low fat diet but this is worth the cholesterol.

navy beans and hamhocks.......

new england boiled dinner....

irish soda bread......

cold fried chicken (for out on the boat)

baked salmon......

this spicy sweet mustard sauce for fondue....

anything mom did took forever....big cast iron ceramic lined pot simmering on the back of the stove....when mom made soda bread it looked like a flour factory in our kitchen......i always wished i'd paid a bit more attention, cuz mom did something "special" to these recipes that simply cannot be duplicated.

mom's cooking

Ruebens ARE great. Had one yesterday. Living in New Mexico (in the boonies), I had to tell the waitress what it was because the cook had NO IDEA what a rueben was, so I was expecting the worst- turns out he did a GREAT job-one of the best ones I have ever had!
But anyway... Mom made the best Apple Cobbler on the face of the earth. She used cinamon & laid the dough in strips, & I LOVED it cold! It was so rich it would tickle your throat as it when down. I was a TOTAL SHAMELESS PIG when she made it.......

Mom's cooking... hmmm... that brings back memories...

like the time I was 10 years old, the family had just sat down to the supper table... my Dad says "maybe someone should turn on the lights so we can see what we're eating". Little Angel pipes up "maybe it's best we don't."

Angel went without supper a LOT.

I too went without supper sometimes.

When parents work esp. moms, they
cook a bunch of things on Sunday
to be heated up during the week.

Things like speghetti, chili, baked
chicken, beans and rice.

Italian families eat alot of pasta,
breads, soul food, things that will
stick to ur ribs and cabooses...lol

My grandfather grew fresh vegatables
in a huge garden, so we always had
fresh veggies to filled our guts. yum...

Today i kinda stay away from those
breads and pasta dishes and most
all fried foods. It's all about being
healthy today to the best of my
ability.

Thanks Angel for reviving this topic.
It made me smile on my 19th sobriety
birthday. Much appreciated.

Thumbs up

We are all allowed to celebrate
what ever time we have clean
or sober, right? One day without
is an accomplishment. 2 days is
even better.

We are all just one day away
from being stoned or drunk, right?

Just take it ODAAT and allow
others to guide u and help u when
times r rough. I know I did.

You were there for me a many
a times when i was struggling.

Ur suggestions, u just being here
for me even if i dont see u makes
a world of difference. And I thank
you so much.

SR RULES..!!!!!!
