Thumbs up TOPIC: Pink*Red* Blue* Purple* Green Hair. What's Ur Color?

Hi Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

At my age Im having a ball with all
the new changes Im going thru in
my life right now.

I guess since I didnt dare experiement
when i was younger, I feel I can do
whatever I want to within reason of
course.

6 tattoos since last yr. First time to
add highlights in my hair. Learning
how to ride a motorcycle solo.
A new marriage.

I had red highlights put in my dark
hair earlier this year to experience
something new for the first time in
my life. It came out good to my
expetations.

Ill be ready for new highlights
before to long and was looking
online at all the different colors
they have available.

Since i watch music videos on tv
I see many of the artists with blues
and reds in their hair....pretty cool
looking.

I would eventually like to highlight
my dark hair at home or just color
it a pretty red, or pink or blue.

Ive never bleached my hair by
myself before and dont think id
have any problems doing it.

I have been keeping my hair a dark
brown/black most all my life and put
the color in myself.

What would be a good brand
to buy with the bleach and color
all in one box? A color that would
stay in for 6 weeks if not longer?

I can buy them online or at Sally's
or Walmart.

Ur suggestions would be much
appreciated.

Thanks guys.

You are SO up my alley with this topic!

For about the past 2 - 3 years, I've experimented with hair colors. I got the "itch" when I saw Kate Winslet with funky-colored hair in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. So I went out and got some L'Oreal temporary hair color... I forget the exact product name, but it was a color mousse in a small can and was supposed to last 4 - 8 shampoos. I got "Chilled Plum" and LOVED it. Thus started the Funky Hair Phenomenon, which is still in progress.

My hair is currently Midnight Blue for the underneath/bottom layer, and two tones of Raspberry kamikaze on top. I say two tones because I bleached a section in the middle of my hair, so the Raspberry is darker on the unbleached sections and BRIGHT on the bleached sections.

I've done some myself and home and I've had applications done professionally in a salon. My hair has been black & purple, HOT pink, and various shades of maroon/red wine/sangria. I have brought pictures of Joss Stone and Pixie Acia to my stylist to use as guides for my color.

I've used (or my stylist has used) Manic Panic, Beyond the Zone, and a Paul Mitchell semi-permanent color (that was the HOT pink). Typically I find that the color gets more vibrant after the first shampoo, then fades a little each wash after that. By 4 weeks I'm noticing a "dullness" to the color; by 6 weeks I'm thinking to myself, "Yeah, I need to decide what I want to do next. Fast."

I also learned that, while the purple was probably my favorite experiment so far, it was the biggest pain in the rear. I haven't had problems with ANY of the reds or pinks rubbing off on clothing or bedding once I'm past that first night (unless I sweat/get wet - then the color drips from my wet hair). The purple bled THE WHOLE TIME it was in my hair. 4 weeks later it was still rubbing off on my pillowcase. And two issues with the fading/coloring: 1) if ANY bleached strands of hair didn't get thoroughly colored, THEY LOOKED GRAY against the properly colored hair. I did NOT spend that time and money getting my hair dyed to come out looking like I had gray hair!! 2) the purple semi-permanent colors fade to blue, and pretty fast. Purple faded much faster than any other color I used, and it didn't hold up so well once it started fading. It didn't look as "passable" for as long as the reds and pinks do, IMO. But it was a REALLY cool color and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

The reds fade to pink and you can pass them off for a couple of weeks past the end of the color's "useful life". Leave them un-touched for 8 weeks or longer, though, and the bleached sections will wind up looking brassy and orange. Not pretty.

Oh, bleach & color in one box you're not going to get. Not for this kind of thing. BUT - it's no sweat. Buy a bleaching kit by Manic Panic or Beyond the Zone, or buy the ingredients yourself (developing cream and bleaching powder - you'll need Volume 30 or 40 most likely).

THINK LONG AND HARD before bleaching your hair. And test it first. I had to play around with the consistency of the cream and the timing. I can't do nearly as good a job as my stylist can, but she p*ssed me off and I don't know who else to go to so I'm currently making do. DO NOT FOOL AROUND WITH BLEACH. *Color* can be fixed, and easily. Bleach is a whole different animal. BE POSITIVE you want to do it before you put it in your hair. It takes a long time for bleached hair to grow out. Just sayin'...

Let me know what other questions you have.

My stylist did the bleaching to add
red highlights in my hair. When i had
it done the very first time the some
of the red faded out the next day
leaving the ends a pretty pink....
that first day i had several compliments
on it...however i returned for her
to fix it to the red i wanted and she
did.

This next time i may have her do
3/4 of my hair red with 1/4 black
just the opposite of what i have now.

Or im thinking red and pink....two tone.

Ill keep to my stylist for now till i am
confident to do it myself.

Good suggestions above ladies.
Thanks.

The color red I like is on Haley Williams
from the group Paramore. Very vibrant
color red.

This was my two-tone red/hot pink from March 2008:

This was the almost-black with purple stripes from July 2008:

Thanks for the pictures.

Is that a real weenie dog
inbetween the buns...lol cute..!

I LOVE the pink red color along
with the black......

Right now i have the dark br/bl
on the crown, scalp and want to
have it red/pink instead with little
streaks of blacks thru out.

Once i get my scalp red/pink
then i can touch up the color
myself at home......

I find the way i have it now, when
the grey begins to show i have to
touch up with dark br/bl color and
that cover the red highlites.

Ive not had my own hair color which
is dark brown/black completely
changed to a different color all over
yet. So i decided to just try highlites
first to see a different color. And i
love the two tone look.

Im one of those that would be willing
to experiement with new color just
to be different. Not wild looking just
pretty and attractive.

See my entire life my family saw
me as a mom very reserved and
stylish.

Ive gone thru more changes in
recovery ...good changes and
my family has no idea. They
have no idea their daughter or
exwife or mom would learn to
ride a motorcycle, or get tattoos
or change hair color,,,,they
have no idea how happy I
am today.

Its about me today and im having
fun and enjoying life.

Anyway....

Back to more of ur own hair color
stories.

I have had every coloured hair that you can imagine!

My favourite was turquoise lol!

I have a tough time now just covering the grey.

Im sure i have lots of grey too. The
dark/brown ash by Loreal is what i find
works best for at home coloring.

After doing that for a long time, I
wanted a change and decided to
try a pretty red highlights mixed in
with my dark hair.

The first time i had that done in
January, it turned out great. However
the next day after washing it the
red lightened up alot. So i went back
for a touch up. This time it stuck
and the red stood out.

Im ready to return to try something
different. Switch the colors around.

Instead of red on black, have my hair
dyed red with black highlights.

Im a little nervous about it cause ive
always had dark brown hair and to
have pretty dark red hair ....well...
will it hold up.

With my regular coloring dark brown
ash, when the grey begins to show,
i can just get the color myself and
put it back in and im good to go.

Will i be able to do the same with
the red without it looking brassy
looking.

See u have to be careful putting
red on black because with dark
pigments in ur hair the red could
turn orange looking.

Thats why i started to think i
could try blue, purple, pink color
instead of red. What do u think?

Do any of the guys color their hair?
What do they use?

Hair Hair Hair.....

I went to my former bakery
yesterday to say my hellos
to buddies i use to work with.

One of my buddies there gave
me the inspiration to finally
go get my hair highlighted.

Well in talking with her yesterday,
I noticed how pretty her hair
was with new color. She handed
me a card of the salon she goes
to and suggested i try her out.

Well this morning I ventured out
to this new salon and made my
appointment for next week.

The girl that did my very first
highlights seemed to be a tad
unsure of what she was doing
but still gave me an ok hair color
i wanted.

I am excited about going to this
new girl and told her what ever
she wanted to do with me hair
just to go for it. Im having fun
with it and look forward to a new
change.

I cant wait....
