Funny thing is, I can remember many New Year's Eves when I was still drinking...but, last year nada! Guess it wasn't too memorable.

This year, as far as I know, probably bingo until 7:30...snacks in the lobby for a while...to bed by 10:00...watch the ball drop. Fall asleep and wake up in 2009. If I could, I'd get up about midnight and go up and down the hallways waking these deadheads up! What a boring group to spend the last night of 2008 with. Ah, well.

Wassailing Song
(Scottish Song)
Here we come a wassailing,
Among the leaves so green
Here we come a wondering
So fair to be seen.

Love and joy come to you
And to your wassail too,
And God bless you and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

Quote:
Wassailing as a practice falls into two distinct categories. The House-Visiting wassail, very much similar to caroling, is the practice of people going door-to-door singing Christmas carols. In modern times, it is most commonly known through reference in various traditional Christmas carols (e.g., "Here we come a-wassailing / among the leaves so green"). The Orchard-Visiting wassail refers to the practice of singing to trees in apple orchards in cider-producing regions of England to promote a good harvest for the coming year.

No, allport. In the past 10 years or so, a lot of towns have "First Night"...it's like a great big street fair with food and entertainment. They get really big crowds.

Of course, the big thing in the US is "watching the ball drop" in Times Square, NYC. A lot of places set off fireworks at midnight, too.

I always liked the song "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve."

Maybe it's much too early in the game
Ooh, but I thought I'd ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's eve?

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year's eve

Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received

Ooh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's Eve?

First footing is when a stranger!(usually a neighbour, we are not mad) is the first person to enter your house after midnight.

They bring with them salt, coal and money and other stuff I cant remember to ensure the house will have food, heat and enough money for the following year.
It originated in Scotland and we stole it and changed it to suit our needs, typical English. lol

And, the count-down begins. Just about 31 hours EST.

Nothing special, really. Might get some theatre popcorn and watch a favorite movie. Maybe stay up til midnight. Wake up in a new year full of new possibilities.

I am going to spend a quiet one here...but will rustle up a plate of my favorite New Years tastys:
bacon dippers with a dollop of horseradish, Ketchup, and a smoked oyster...
how divine!
Happy New Years Everyone!

NEW YEAR'S QUOTES

Jay Leno
Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average… which means, you have met your New Year's resolution.

James Agate
New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time.

Eric Zorn
Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle.

Bill Vaughan
An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

Charles Lamb
New Year's Day is every man's birthday.

Oprah Winfrey
Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.

Mark Twain
New Year's Day… now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.

Anonymous
Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits.

Joey Adams
May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!

Anais Nin
I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me.

Oscar Wilde
Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account.

Robert Paul
I'm a little bit older, a little bit wiser, a little bit rounder, but still none the wiser.

Anonymous
A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one Year and out the other.

And, the countdown continues...Eight Hours to go...Of course, it's already 4:00 a.m. January 1, 2009 in Australia!

This is the "older" man I was referring to. I had trouble coaxing George to go first footing. He's such a private person, you know.
