Laptop recommendations?

Im going to The Virgin Islands for one year to paint some apts. My first purchase after I get there and make a couple bucks is going to be a laptop. I was lookin to spend $500-$600. I know nothing about computers. I will be using it mostly to upload and edit my videos. And to come here to SoberRecovery. Heres a list I pulled up. Any suggestions? http://computers.pricegrabber.com/laptop/p...0/form_keyword=

Hewlett Packard are good. My old laptop was a Hewlett Packard.

You'll probably need to make sure it's wireless enabled, as well.

I've got an HP, but I had some problems with the wireless and found out the newer models also had a problem..they fixed it for free, but I was without the laptop twice, for 2 weeks each time.

Several people I've talked to, all computer geeks (including a guy on the "geek squad" at Best Buy) swear by the Mac's. They say they are more expensive in the beginning, but you never have any problems with them and they last forever. In fact, the guy at Best Buy said he feels like the Maytag repairman of Mac's...he never has to fix a Mac. When my HP bites the dust, I am seriously thinking of getting a Mac.

We have 3 desktops and 2 laptops, here at the house...all HP's, except for one laptop, which is a Dell and is old. My HP is the fastest, and except for the wireless problem, I've had no complaints. I bought a USB wireless thing, for about $40 when my wireless went out, and it worked fine. The only reason I got it repaired was they did it for free. I now have an extended warranty on it.

Going to the Virgin Island's sounds AWESOME!! Want some company?

Hugs and prayers!

Amy

My mum recently got an Acer and had to send it back and then got an Asus and it is really nice quality. The Acer she had was poor quality.

Check out Newegg.com they seem quite reasonable for price.

You could get a Sony Vaio for that price, I don't know if it is any good but they used to be a lot more expensive and look very stylish.

I highly recommend a mac! I have a iBook G4 laptop and it's been great for my personal uses. Have you looked into getting a reburbished iBook?

Love,

Lenina

Tony,

We looked into the refurbs and there were some pretty good deals. I think it was in a computer repair shop or tech store.

Love,

Lenina

I recommend either a Toshiba or an Acer.
I am a certifyable tech and have seen more Dells, HP and IBM/Lenovo crap out before their time than I can explain.
I have a Toshiba Satelliet M55 and love it.
My x has an Acer and loves it.
She bought both of them at least 5 years ago and have never had any problems with it unless you want to call Best Buy Techs installing the wrong type of memory upgrade and frying the motherboard a problem.....lol. They gave me an upgrade for free !!!
Laughs on them !!! Good Help IS hard to Find !!! ROFLMAO

Expandability and ports are important these days.
Understand what you are going to use it for and go a little bigger in case your needs change a little. If you tell me what you are using it for I can make a recommendation on specs that you will want to look for.

I cant help you too much on macs tho' ! lol

Nothing really special. I will be using it mostly to edit my quad riding videos I make, like these two below. Also buying one of these soon. (costs more than the laptop) V.I.O. -- The Leader in Wearable Video Technology, Digital Helmet Cameras and Cam Accessories I upload a lot of videos I shoot and still photos too. And then of course cruising the forums. SoberRecovery and about a half dozen or so quad forums.

Make sure you have a fast processor, enough RAM and a good video card whether it is a laptop or a desktop.
If your not a professional / just use it just for home use you dont have to go top of the line on all of these specs. You can go middle of the road and it will probly be more than you need and still have room to multitask.

I am rebuilding a laptop that someone spilled coffee on and just have to replace the motherboard and I will then have a really good spare !!!

PM me and I will go to a website and design one that you would be happy with.
I am also a reseller but I cant do that on this forum.

Apple and Lenovo (formerly IBM laptops) have the best reputation for reliability and customer service. And both are on the expensive end of the scale. There is a 'get what you pay for' factor in buying computers.

Yet both have refurbished options. My second laptop was a refurb Dell and it lasted 8 years before the motherboard went bad. Dell's reputation had gone very far downhill since that time (they may be back on the upswing lately). I know many people with HP's and there have been good and bad experiences. My general impression is that anything built for 'home' use, not business, tends to have more problems. Mostly because of the huge amount of pre-installed software, but also because they try to be all things to all users.

refurbished websites:
Refurbished Mac - Apple Store (U.S.)
Lenovo Outlet

Right now I have a lenovo R60 thinkpad with XP/Pro and am quite happy. Got it for about $990 on ebay last year. Their 'T' line is the best, but is more $$$.
In both cases for good video production you want a fast processor and lots of ram. Intel's Core2 Duo is the latest processor and I think it is used in Macbooks too.
