the vet can give u something to make sure they don't get motion sickness.i had a pekapoo that got sick the 1st time in a car, took her to the vet, gave her meds to her one time & she never got sick again.i think some times they r just nervous till they know what is going on.she loved to ride after that.

i've never had a cat with motion sickness, just dogs. my cats seem to travel better if i have a large cage for them, that i put blankets and some of their familiar toys in. then drape most of the cage with a towel or blanket so it's nice and dark for them (if they get overstimulated with all the new sights and experiences of a long car ride they can get distressed). good luck!

I traveled with mine for years. She's gone now, after 9 1/2 years. She'd just curl in the carrier, I'd get her out for rest stops,. she'd walk on a leash kinda stretch and all ... she didn't need tranqs or anything. She didn't like it, but she'd go whever i was.

Thanks Barb...when ever i took both of my cats to the doctor ...only one would throw up when wed return home...i was thinking it was motion sickness.... Its been awhile since ive had them in the car... The drive is about 5 or 6 hours...and my cats r inside cats...so they will stay in the car.... I was just trying to avoid sickness in the car... if all possible....

Its important to let them know that they're okay and safe and that they're not being punished, (cats think weird thought sometimes). Talk to them while you're driving to "normalize" the situation for them.

Sharon, This may be wierd but when I traveled with my cat I just let her ride in the car freely. She would either curl up in the back window (not the safest, I know) or on my lap, the seat next to me, or on the floor in the backseat. She never got carsick and was much happier than if she were locked in a cage. The one time I put her on a tranquilizer to fly she meowed more than when I didn't, go figure!

"how do you travel with cats"...........on prescription meds thanks!!(me, not them!) just jokeing......if you let them go freely, be very careful that the don't interfer with driving.....under the pedals, etc.......sometimes they like the heat or a.c. vents on......don't feed them too soon before the trip, & well...bring plenty of towels & "fabreeze" just in case LOL. meds can help, but my experience has also been that cats don't take well to them, but if they are nuetered boys, they are more likely to be ok with being drugged (hey! it's true....no offense ment!).........feed them well the night before, but not that day is my biggest thought.....also they might like some mellow music.their sensetive ears aren't about to go for metal/punk/or rap

My Toby hates a cat cage but absolutely loves riding in the car if I let him free. He looks out the window and sleeps in the back seat for long trips. I take water for him and some dry snacks. If it's a 5 hour drive, maybe stop every hour or so and walk them on a leash so they don't run away. This may upset some cats (strange smells) and if so then maybe only stop once. I think they will sleep more than you think.

when we moved from Maryland to Massachusetts, we had a puppy training crate that had a divider in it. we put a cat on each side of the divider with l ots of blankets (I even put one over the crate to calm them) then I drove like hell straight through, eight hours to get it over with. All went well except for some growling. Oh, and they didn't "talk" to me for 3 days!
