Is my career over?

I have just realized that my drinking has totally screwed up my life. Over and over, mishaps related to drinking have caused me and my family suffering. I am considering a treatment program to address some root causes of my drinking problems. I am concerned with life after such a program. Will I be able to work?

Welcome to SR, cubbie. Glad you're here.

The answer is YES! there is life after detox, rehab and recovery. And you know what? Life is BETTER! You will not only be able to work, but you will be able to work much better!

If you don't change your ways, will you even have a job? All I can tell you is that if you DO stop drinking and live a life of recovery, you have a really good chance of making things better. This means your job, your relationships, your health, your wallet... everything!

Go for it, cubbie. Recovery is FANTASTIC!

Thanks for the reply. I am mainly concerned with how potential employers will view my past, especially the legal problems. Other than entering a program and addressing my problem, are there other steps I can take to help me find a decent job.

You will be shocked and pleasently surprised at how many employers will gladly hire a person who has had problems. They realize how much value a person in recovery brings to their workplace.

I have met some amazing people in my AA meetings and many of them are business owners who employ addicts and alcoholics who are in recovery. Some of the members of my AA group go to the local PreTrial facility and offer jobs to people for when they get out. Some go to the local rehab facilities to offer jobs to people who are ready to graduate.

Your rehab facility may have employment assistance, check around.

Good luck!
