| Graceland Looking up the winding driveway up to Graceland, I pictured Elvis. He wasn't on the drive, or in a car. Barefooted with black pants and a gray banlon shirt, he seemed to have been in a meditative state, the grass massaging his bare feet and blanketing them with it's plush green softness. His head flung back, eyes just slits peering up into the heavens. He had his hands in his pockets and knees slightly bent. "I wonder what he would be thinking" I thought as I envisioned him standing on the grounds he loved so dearly.... I have just returned from Memphis. I was there, oh about 9 years ago and a great passion overtook me regarding Elvis and his lifestyle. I wrote a story about my visit and had it published in a local newspaper. Now, some 9 years later, I am empassioned again. This man's life fascinates me and I have such a great respect for him. You see, Elvis was a man. Not a God, not a deity, just a man. He gave a great deal of his money and love to the Memphis community. A country boy who loved to sing gospel, blues and rock n roll, Elvis loved people. He felt for the poor of the community and as the story goes, he drove a brand new cadillac to the door of a poor woman of Memphis. The story says that Elvis, an insomniac, was very restless one night. He wakened his bodyguards, had the owner of a Cadillac dealership in Memphis open up the store at 3 am where he purchaed one on the spot and drove it himself to the door of this one woman. I am sure there are many more stories like this one, but it shows us his humanness. His love and connection to people. He suffered. He was not happy, who would be with all the drugs and alcohol he consumed. But, his love for people and compassion makes him a good man in my eyes. He still has the stuff it takes to stir something deep inside me and help me see the good in everyone. Graceland. You're beautiful. So are you, Elvis Aaron. |
