Lightbulb P.s

Love is like wildflowers.
It’s often found in the most unlikely places.

To get more out of life, give more of yourself.

Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb.
That’s where the fruit is.

You’ll learn more about a road by traveling it
than by consulting all the maps in the world.

When fate shuts a door, come in through the window.

No failure is ever final, nor is any success.

If you’re doing your best,
you won’t have time to worry about failure.

Dreams come true for those who work while they dream.

No one is guaranteed happiness,
life just gives us time and space.
It’s up to us to fill it with joy and meaning.

Do for others with no desire of returned favors.
We all should plant some trees we’ll never sit under.

True wealth is what you are, not what you have.

Almost all of our unhappiness is the result of comparing ourselves to others.

We can’t do much about our appearance, but we have total control over the kind of person we become.

To change everything, simply change your attitude.

Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye.

Carrying a grudge is like a run in a stocking –
it can only get worse. Forgiveness is the answer.

When you remember how hard it is to change yourself,
you begin to understand what little chance we have of changing others.

Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers,
why not gather your own bouquet.

A friend is a person who knows all about you
but likes you anyway.

Friends are like a beautiful garden.
They require regular care.

The people on our planet are not standing in a line single file.
Look closely, everyone is really standing in a circle, holding hands. Whatever you can give to the person standing next to you, it eventually comes back to you.

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles,
it might be the only sunshine they see all day.

~ How to Get Along With People ~

Keep skid chains on your tongue; always say less than you think. Cultivate a low, persuasive voice. How you say it counts more than what you say.

Make promises sparingly, and keep them faithfully, no matter what it costs.

Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind and encouraging word to or about somebody. Praise good work, regardless of who did it. If criticism is needed, criticize helpfully, never spitefully.

Be interested in others, their pursuits, their work, their homes and families. Make merry with those who rejoice; with those who weep, mourn. Let everyone you meet, however humble, feel that you regard him as a person of importance.

Be cheerful. Don't burden or depress those around you by dwelling on your minor aches and pains and small disappointments. Remember, everyone is carrying some kind of a load.

Keep an open mind. Discuss but don't argue. It is a mark of a superior mind to be able to disagree without being disagreeable.

Let your virtues speak for themselves. Refuse to talk of another's vices. Discourage gossip. It is a waste of valuable time and can be extremely destructive.

Be careful of another's feelings. Wit and humor at the other person's expense are rarely worth it and may hurt when least expected.

Pay no attention to ill-natured remarks about you. Remember, the person who carried the message may not be the most accurate reporter in the world. Simply live so that nobody will believe them. Disordered nerves and bad digestion are a common cause of backbiting.

Don't be too anxious about the credit due you. Do your best, and be patient. Forget about yourself, and let others "remember." Success is much sweeter that way.

~ Promise Yourself ~

... To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind;
... To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet;

... To make all your friends feel that there is something in them;

... To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true;

... To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best;

... To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own;

... To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future;

... To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile;

... To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others;

... To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear; and too happy to permit the presence of trouble;

... To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words, but in great deeds;

... To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

~ Time's Passage ~
For reasons I dare not divulge I find myself thinking of time's passage, and of the milestones with which we mark it. Like birthdays and anniversaries.

Baseball's regular season ended last Sunday. The Dodgers' Brett Butler closed out a 17 year major league career at age 40. He remarked: "I'm surprised how fast it went." So say we all. One of Neil Diamond's old songs has it: "Done Too Soon." And in somber measure the New Testament intones: "You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." (James 4:14)

So what to do? Two things, it seems to me, at least two. One: Use up each day. Fill it to overflowing with good. Deliberately enjoy and Two: Begin now. Mend a fractured friendship. Mail an overdue letter. Correct a misunderstanding. Repair a broken heart. Lay aside a grievance. Act on a noble impulse. As we all know, "The night cometh."

~ Risk ~
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk involvement.
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken.
Because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
If you risk nothing and do nothing, you dull your spirit.
You may avoid suffering and sorrow, but you cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, and live.
Chained by your attitude, you are a slave.
You have forfeited your freedom.
Only if you risk are you free.

~ Always Ask the Turtle ~

Gloria Steinem, the writer and leader in the feminist movement, once learned an important political lesson as a student on a geology field trip.
"I took geology because I thought it was the least scientific of the sciences," she told an audience at Smith College.

"On a field trip, while everyone else was off looking at the meandering Connecticut River, I was paying no attention whatsoever. Instead, I had a found a giant, GIANT turtle that had climbed out of the river, crawled up a dirt road, and was in the mud on the embankment of another road, seemingly about to crawl up on it and get squashed by a car.

"So, being a good codependent with the world, I tugged and pushed and pulled until I managed to carry this huge, heavy, angry snapping turtle off the embankment and down the road.

"I was just putting it back into the river when my geology professor arrived and said, 'You know, that turtle probably spent a month crawling up that dirt road to lay its eggs in the mud by the side of the road, and you just put it back in the river.'

"Well, I felt terrible. But in later years, I realized that this was the most important political lesson I learned, one that cautioned me about the authoritarian impulse of both left and right.

"Always ask the turtle."

~ Think Positive ~
If you want to get somewhere, you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never give up.

The secret of life isn't what happens to you, but what you do with what happens to you.

Help other people to cope with their problems and your own will be easier to cope with.

Never use the word impossible seriously again. Toss it into the verbal wastebasket.

Self-trust is the first secret of success. So believe in and trust yourself.

Stand up to your obstacles and do something about them. You will find that they haven't half the strength you think they have.

Joy increases as you give it, and diminishes as you try to keep it for yourself. In giving it, you will accumulate a deposit of joy greater than you ever believed possible.

How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself - so always think positively.

Go at life with abandon; give it all you've got. And life will give all it has to you.

<!--The Text-->
Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe falls 10 feet from its mother's womb and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over and tucks its legs under its body. From this position it considers the world for the first time and shakes off the last vestiges of the birthing fluid from its eyes and ears. Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its offspring to the reality of life.

In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a newborn giraffe learns its first lesson.

The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendulous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over heels.

When it doesn't get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again. The struggle to rise is momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it again to stimulate its efforts. Finally, the calf stands for the first time on its wobbly legs.

Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing. She kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all enjoy young giraffes, and they'd get it too, if the mother didn't teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it.

The late Irving Stone understood this. He spent a lifetime studying greatness, writing novelized biographies of such men as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin.

Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of all these exceptional people. He said, "I write about people who sometime in their life have a vision or dream of something that should be accomplished and they go to work.

"They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified, and for years they get nowhere. But every time they're knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And at the end of their lives they've accomplished some modest part of what they set out to do."

~ You Are Unique ~
You may not think that the world needs you, but it does. For you are unique, like no one that has ever been before or will come after.

No one can speak with your voice, say your piece, smile your smile, or shine your light. No one can take your place, for it is yours alone to fill.

If you are not there to shine your light, who knows how many travelers will lose their way as they try to pass by your empty place in the darkness?

~ Walk Your Talk ~

I'd rather see a sermon
Than hear one any day.
I'd rather once you walk with me
Than merely show the way.
The eye's a better pupil
And more willing than the ear.
Fine counsel is confusing
But the example's always clear.

I soon can learn to do it
If you let me see it done.
I can see your hands in action
But your tongue too fast may run.

And the lectures you deliver
May be very fine and true.
But I'd rather get my lesson
By observing what you do.

For a person must understand you
And the high advice you give.
But there's no misunderstanding
How you act and how your live.

To surrender to life "as is" can miraculously transform situations. It is in this surrender that we are able to receive. The Universe gives us the tools to fulfill our destinies when we let things be.
When is the right time to surrender? In what situations? Every day, every moment, and every situation is an opportunity for surrender. We surrender to a force bigger than we are when we are born and again when we die. Between life and death we get lost because we forget to surrender.

If something should be changed and you have the power to change it, go ahead. But learn to recognize the situations that cannot be changed. They are the times when we feel as if we are bailing against the tide, when we struggle and are afraid. These are the times when we must accept and surrender, or our struggle consumes us.

If you don't feel at peace, it's time to surrender.

If life doesn't flow, it's time to surrender.

If you want to change what cannot be changed, it's time to surrender.

Letting things be instead of constantly struggling to make them happen is a wonderful gift we give to ourselves. If we look back on life, we will see that some of our best moments and greatest opportunities did not come out of struggle. They seem like lucky coincidences, as if they occurred because we were in the right place at the right time. That is how surrender works, and this is how life works: subtly.

~ A Part of the Whole ~
A human being is part of the whole called by us a universe - a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and his feelings, as something separate from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us; it restricts us to our personal decisions and our affections to a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Albert Einstein

<!--The Text-->Two-time Olympic pentathlete Marilyn King said, "If you can't imagine it, you can't ever do it. In my experience the image always precedes the reality." She provides a very moving example of how powerful the conscious use of picturing what you want can be.

When King was preparing for the 1980 Olympic trials, she suffered a severe back injury and was confined to bed just nine months before the trials. Determined not to let this injury keep her from performing, she spent the next four months doing nothing but watching films of the best performers in the pentathlon events and visualizing herself going through the same events.

After she placed second at the Olympic trials despite her lack of physical preparation, she stated that it was her psychological state, not her physical condition, that gained her victory.

Thomas Edison once said, "Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with preparation."

By the time the Lord made woman,

He was into his sixth day of working overtime.

An angel appeared and said,

"Why are you spending so much time on this one?"

And the Lord answered, "Have you seen my spec sheet on her?

She has to be completely washable, but not plastic,

have over 200 movable parts, all replaceable

and able to run on diet coke and leftovers,

have a lap that can hold four children at one time,

have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart

-and she will do everything

with only two hands."

The angel was astounded at the requirements.

"Only two hands!? No way!

And that's just on the standard model?

That's too much work for one day.

Wait until tomorrow to finish."

"But I won't," the Lord protested.

"I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart.

She already heals herself when she is sick

AND can work 18 hour days."

The angel moved closer and touched the woman.

"But you have made her so soft, Lord."

"She is soft," the Lord agreed,

"but I have also made her tough.

You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."

"Will she be able to think?", asked the angel.

The Lord replied,

"Not only will she be able to think,

she will be able to reason and negotiate."

The angel then noticed something,

and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek.

"Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model.

I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one."

"That's not a leak,"

the Lord corrected,

"that's a tear!"

"What's the tear for?" the angel asked.

The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy,

her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love,

her loneliness, her grief and her pride."

The angel was impressed.

"You are a genius, Lord.

You thought of everything!

Woman is truly amazing."

And she is!

Women have strengths that amaze men.

They bear hardships and they carry burdens,

but they hold happiness,

love and joy.

They smile when they want to scream.

They sing when they want to cry.

They cry when they are happy

and laugh when they are nervous.

They fight for what they believe in.

They stand up to injustice.

They don't take "no" for an answer

when they believe there is a better solution.

They go without so their family can have.

They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.

They love unconditionally.

They cry when their children excel

and cheer when their friends get awards.

They are happy when they hear about

a birth or a wedding.

Their hearts break when a friend dies.

They grieve at the loss of a family member,

yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.

They know that a hug and a kiss

can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you

to show how much they care about you.

The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.

They have compassion and ideals.

They give moral support to their family and friends.

Women have vital things to say and everything to give .

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,

IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.
