Borrowing from a thread started by JT (Soberrecovery Book Club), I thought it might be fun to start a movie club. Do you have a movie to share that has lifted your spirits, or spoken to you in some way? I watched a movie last night called "The Straight Story." It was the true story of a man in his 70s who, due to health reasons, can't drive any more. He gets the news that his estranged brother, who lives hundreds of miles away, is dying. Money is tight, so he hitches a trailer to his riding lawn mower and drives it to see his brother before he dies. It was a beautiful story and a wonderful example of love and selflessness and the kindness of strangers. Has anyone else seen it? I'd never even heard of it before. I don't know how easy it would be to find it at the video store, but it would be well worth the effort. Anyone else care to share? |

Well I would have to say the Matrix was wonderful. I believe that recovery is like waking up into a new reality and the Matrix just hit home with me. I knew exactly what he felt like when he woke up and learned that nothing he believed was true. I also absolutely loved the Prince of Egypt. To me it is a parable of how God takes us from slavery to freedom. Hugs, MG |

Hey Margo Great idea and I will sticky the post so people can keep adding. I need to think this over. Today I watched the Incredible Mr. Limpet and I really don't think I would put that in an inspirational category Many hugs Love Debbie |

I've been thinking and thinking about what movies might have spoken to me or lifted my spirit. I can tell you that every year when the Wizard of Oz comes on I watch it. I remember watching it when I was a child, I remember watching it with girlfriends in my teens and I still watch it. When I think of the Wizard of Oz, it makes me smile and always brings back happy memories. Two movies that have touched me in some way, were My Girl and When a Man Loves a Woman, I know there are more but I just can't remember their names ![]() Many hugs. Love, Debbie |

Hi All - here is another one I would recommend that I watched last night, called "Floating Away." It's the story of an alcoholic mom (Rosanna Arquette) who loses custody of her son due to her alcoholism. She goes on a road trip to find him and hooks up with 2 guys on the road (Judge Reinhold and Paul Hogan) who help her in her search. Excellent! Based on a book by Tim Sandlin under the title "Sorrow Floats." Looks like I'll be hitting the bookstores this weekend!

Steel Magnolias is one of my favourites ever. For a good old-fashioned laugh, go see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" - it's a hoot.

Dwell & Babysteps I definitely agree with you on the Labyrinth - that is my favourite movie of all time. I also like Patch Adams (Robin Williams) a lot. Oh and I love 28 Days (Sandra Bullock), it's sad but cracks me up too ![]() Love DolphinBlue |

| Soberrecovery Movie Club Margo, I thot "The Straight Story" was cool. I'd not heard of it & would probably never have watched it on my own. But we were staying with some friends at a beach cottage, and they rented it. I'm glad they did. Amazing DolphinBlue! I was just getting ready to write down here that I loved "28 Days" and there you wrote it! Well I agree! I've pretty much liked anything I've seen with Sandra Bullock, and also Keanu Reeves; I guess that's why I liked "Speed" so much. "The Matrix" was incredible and I can't wait for the second one! Pauline, "Santa Clause 2" and the first one were funny, good stories of transformation and how it affects those around us as well as us. I'm glad to see this here. I've just been put in charge of the "Films Forum" on another site and this will help me get more ideas. Thanks! Taz |

| And another one...
Hysterical Blindness - two 20somethings (Uma Thurman and Juliette Lewis) in 1980s New Jersey looking for love in all the wrong places. Wrenching to watch at times, but well worth it.

Definitely "Dirty Dancing" just for the music and dancing AND for the message, "Shirley Valentine".........for us ladies of a certain age, both the theme song from shirley Valentine <The Girl Who Used To Be Me> by Patti Austin and the story as well.

I would love to see "Chicago", but I'll have to wait until it is out on video or dvd as I can't afford the $17.00 to go to the show<unreal cost, eh>. And, I think the really cute guy who laughed has to do some growing up.........a lot of guys who are younger, make fun of "chick flicks", simply because they're "supposed to". It would not do to let the rest of the "guy population" down. I also want to see Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.......when they're available for rental. nancygrew2 |

Anyone who hasn't watched "A Walk to Remember" should. You really have nothing better to do! Also, I watched "Crossroads" with my daughter over the weekend. It has a really good message (I was shocked that I really enjoyed Britney Spears). "Pay it Forward" "When A Man Loves A Woman"
