| My short story-Black Vandura part two
“I can see that the power is still off in town. We should go back and get another load while we can. Scott said. “Are you completely stupid? We almost got caught back there. If that van hadn’t fired, you woulda been f#cked. “Yeah but I know what I did wrong. Next time round it’ll be easy. “ I aint doin it again. No way Jose. “What’s the big deal? We got the system down now. “What’s this ‘we’ sh#t, you got a turd in your pocket or something? Me and Lisa aren’t going back, we’ll wait right here. “How bout you Lisa? You going to let him make decisions for you? I just need someone to give me a hand with loading. It’s easy. Scott said “Sure, I’ll go. That was awesome! It was just like when I snuck out my mother’s car in the middle of the night last winter. Lisa replied. Suddenly Alex was the odd man out. Lisa would think less of him if he didn’t go. Worse yet, the thought of Lisa being Scott’s accomplice filled him with a fear of the two becoming closer. After all, the established life of an older man is attractive to a young woman without much direction in life. “I guess you can wait here. Come on Lisa Lisa and Scott walked to the van. As he sat on Scott’s porch, Alex admired Lisa’s swinging waist-length hair and how wonderful she looked to him in her black leather boots and black leather jacket that fit her so well, tight around the waist as it formed a V up to her broad shoulders. She was the quintessential bad-girl he had always been attracted to. He wasn’t going to do anything that might result in their separation. “Wait up. I’m coming along. Lisa turned and smiled at Alex. He had her approval now. When they arrived back at the woodpile behind Latinen Lumber., Lisa was helping. It was a military-style, well executed process. Everybody had a job and they were doing it. Within minuets they shut the rear doors and filed into the van. Scott was careful not to let the engine get loaded up with fuel this time as they drove toward the drive. He periodically shifted the van into neutral and revved the engine slightly to clear it. Once again they approached the end of the narrow drive with their lights off. Just as they got close enough to the road they saw headlights coming in the opposite lane. “Oh sh#t, stop. Alex said. They waited in the darkness for it to go by. “It’s the cops. Scott said as he tried to put the van in reverse. The car was now too close to do anything and avoid possibly being seen. “He’s lookin. Just pull out and keep driving. Alex said as the Columbus city police car went by. Scott turned on the lights and pulled onto the highway hoping they would look like they were supposed to be there. “He’s turning around! Lisa said as she watched out the back window. Suddenly red and blue lights bounced off the neighboring houses and businesses as the police car sped toward the van. Alex knew they were in serious trouble. He looked at Lisa in the back seat. She had been transformed from an adventurously beautiful young woman into a scared little girl. “We’re done. Alex said in defeat. The officer approached the van and asked Scott for his license and registration. “What were you guys doing back there? “We were just parked on the river bank listening to music. Scott said. “Sir, can you step out of the vehicle and open the van doors for me? Scott opened the back doors. Before the officer was a stack of approximately one-hundred 2x4’s. It looked as if they could have been making a delivery for Latinen Lumber there was so many. “You two in the vehicle, stay right where you’re at. The Officer commanded as he frisked Scott against the van and handcuffed him. Soon backup arrived. Alex and Lisa were handcuffed, put in the patrol cars and brought to the police station. After several hours of making statements and being processed, Alex was offered his phone call. “Yeah Dad, it’s me. “It’s late, what do you want? “I’m at the police station. Scott, n, Lisa, n I got in some trouble. “What’d you do now? Alex confessed all the ugly details to his father. He knew he had better not leave out anything or try making excuses if he was going to ask for help. “I’ll come get you tomorrow. You can spend the night there. I can’t believe you would be so stupid. Alex spent the night in a solitary cell. He lay on the thin, plastic covered mattress and looked at the stainless steel toilet. He contemplated what he had done and where his actions had landed him. Alex had been in trouble before but nothing like this. When he was a juvenile he had been brought home by the police once for driving his motorcycle without a license but never arrested. He was in a real jail cell. Real criminals had laid right where he was and looked at the same toilet. The next day the jail tender opened Alex’s cell door and asked him to follow. They walked the corridor and Alex caught a glimpse of Scott as he slept in his cell. From not showering, Scott looked like a bum that had been sleeping on the streets. Alex looked no better. They made it to the front office of the police station. Alex’s father was patiently sitting on an oak bench and was void of any expression. “Is somebody coming for Lisa? Alex asked his father. “I talked to her parents this morning and they said they were. The ride home was quiet. Alex stared at the floor in shame and didn’t want to say anything for fear of having to talk about what he had done. He just wanted to get home and hide in the sanctuary of his room. “I can’t believe you would do something so stupid. There was a long pause. Alex said nothing. “Your name will be in the paper you know. “I’m sorry Dad. “Sorry isn’t good enough. Your name is my name. You have disgraced the entire family. Alex knew not to say anything more unless he’s asked. “You’re old enough to make your own decisions. I’m not responsible for you anymore. Next time I’m not coming to your rescue. You can rot in jail for all I care. That was the last that was ever said by anyone on the subject. When they got home Alex went straight to his room and didn’t come out. Later that night,Lisa called his private line. “Hi. Lisa said. “Hey, how are you. “I’m fine I just wanted to talk about something. “OK. “Well, we’ve been dating for a long time now, and, well, I’m thinking we shouldn’t see each other anymore. “How come? “I don’t know, I just think it’s best. “Oh. The continued with small talk for a while and finally said their goodbyes. In the following months, Alex would occasionally call Lisa to talk but she wasn’t responsive. He finally gave up calling her, knowing closure had happened between them. A few weeks after the incident Alex was preparing to go out with friends on a Friday night. “Where’re you going? Alex’s father asked. “I’m just going out. Try and find something to do. “Is Scott coming to pick you up? “Nah, I decided maybe I shouldn’t hang out with him anymore. Alex's father didn't say anything. He simply looked at Alex with a peaceful grin and slowly nodded his head up.
