The baby, the little girl, the woman

I took the baby in my arms and held her close
And as I rocked her through the night
I examined her from her from head to her toes
There was nothing amiss, perfect in my sight
I cuddled her closely against my aching heart
And felt the warmth of the love she had to give
The love she did not have from the start
She now has, as long as we both shall live

I took the little girl by the hand and kissed her baby fat cheek
And we walked together to our creek, then sat down for a rest
She said she is not happy at all, her life is very bleek
I brushed her hair from her brow and said, it will be for the best
She ate a sandwich from my back pack that I made ahead of time
I dipped a napkin in the stream, and wiped her tear streaked face
I told her this was not her fault, she had committed no crime
When she is need of comfort, meet me here at this place
I held her close and our bodies felt together as one
She looked up and gave me a smile as brilliant as the sun

When I think of the little girl of the past
I know how lonesome and unloved she was
But I realized something from this at last
She was never really alone at all because
God was always with her in her heart of many pieces
And the gift he has given to her as a woman grown up
To go back in time and give the child the love she never had
Heals the woman she is today and fills her spiritual cup
