Cant sleep without alchohol, hopefully for now plz help!!!

hey guys im a really really heavy drinker and i normally only go for like 1 or 2 days without drinkin, and on those days i just cant seem to sleep. ive been using alchohol mainy just to pass out and sleep!(that is really bad)and now i think im feelin nerve damage from it, this is also why i need to stop. the pills i already tryed are alteril, hydroxyzine and trazadone, trazadone seems to work a bit but the doctor took me off that medicine because i had problems with it.
So is it really insomia that i have right now. Should i tell a doctor these problems? What are some other medicine i can take that might help?

I enjoy insomia, PTSD, depression, GAD but 7 months still don't sleep well but it's still better. I walk my dog, go to the store, pass DUI check points been on many meds like Seroquel. Right now meditation seems the best thing. I'll just keep exploring. My best to you

I am honestly and totally baffled someone could "like" ptsd. Not to be a bi!ch or anything...but wha?! (it's post traumatic stress disorder--and gad is generalized anxiety disorder)

My drinking escalated a million times over when the ptsd got bad--i wouldn't sleep for days and the nightmares/panic attacks were so draining too, i had issues w/drinking already but yeah. Add in an eating disorder, realizes oh hey now...i'm even losing weight (and my life, and my sanity, you know fair trade, yeah not so much) and it just spiraled.

DEFINITELY talk to your doctor. I started having neuropathy and soon after autoimmune issues arose-- who knows what caused x/y/z but please do.
(trazodone was one of the few that worked for awhile i did not/could not abuse, but i built up a tolerance and couldn't go to a higher dose. i abused pills and benzos but am hoping to maybe someday go back on ativan if i get my head right. both those did help in combo)
Have you tried seroquel? Its an atypical antipsychotic, but in low doses they use if for insomnia, but i built a tolerance up to that too--and the higher the dose the more it messed with my head.
I know it's really frustrating--is the drinking just at night, is this spilling into other areas- and also i know i always picked it vs. no sleep--but the quality sleep you get when passing out via getting loaded is really horrible quality though.
I'll keep my eye on this post, I wish i had better help. Remoron worked for awhile for me, but i can't handle the side effects.
Hang in there.

MycoolFitz^ I figured that after I posted it...but one never knows these days (i blame intense sleep deprivation earlier for my inability to pick up on sarcasm, sorry!--also seemed to missed the end! and sorry you have to deal with it as well. I'm kinda an idiot somedays)
Did you start to build up a tolerance to seroquel too?

I am not a doctor... but it sounds like withdrawals from alcohol. Were you having issues with sleeping before you were a heavy drinker? Also, I take zoloft and it interferes with my sleep. Try talking to your doctor.

Hi Nitrob0x

Not being able to sleep is very common in withdrawal...I would have usually hassles for a couple of weeks....but if it's concerning you or negatively impacting your life, definitely the best thing is to speak with a Dr and ask them about treatments - what may have worked for other people may not work for you - it may not even be suitable for you.

Thats why we ask people not to ask for or to give medical advice here

It can do that - but only a Dr could tell you for sure if that's what you're suffering from - and if it's permanent.

I had a lot of tingles and numbness in my hands that went away after I got sober and it's never come back

Hello,

Congratulations on being alcohol free! That's so wonderful.

Vistaril is a strong antihistamine with a bit of an antidepressant quality to it. You can google it and find a lot of information on it.

I take Seroquel (off label use) at a very low dose of 12.5mg for sleep, anxiety and other nightmarish symptoms, due to benzo w/d after being cold turkeyed. Doc told me it would be okay to take Atrivan every day for several months for panic and insomnia, idiot.

I very much advice not to go the benzo route for sleep. Benzos are a very very bad deal. As for Seroquel, I would also not recommend it as either. It has very difficult withdrawal symptoms as well as some pretty scary side effects, some of which can be perminant. I wish i had not felt the desperate need to use it.

Vistaril is much the lesser risk Imho. Perhaps you are in withdrawal and as time passes the insomnia will lessen over time.

Have you tried Benedryl or Unisom that has Doxylamine? Sometimes they work pretty well for insomnia. Or perhaps Melatonin or Valarian?

I hope you find some relief soon.

*Hugs*
Tink
