insomnia and withdraw

Is it possible to get severe insomnia after a month of being clean off of OXY. Like not sleeping for 2 days straight. My wife has been off of subs for 11 days now and all of the sudden she can't sleep at all. Two nights ago she had rls and she's been up ever since. Is ther any advice on how she can get some sleep without medication, or is this part of withdraw?

Google wasn't very much help for us. She's been doing great and now all of the sudden this.

It is not un-natural to have insomnia for some time from withdrawal and even post acute withdrawal. There are a lot of things that can help. Exercise is the biggest followed by proper diet. Supplements help. 5-HTP and multivitamins help, especially B vitamins. Valerian root extract is an excellent herb to promote good sleep along with just a plain old glass of milk before bed. Some of the things that hurt are: smoking and caffiene. Unfortunately, it just takes time for normal sleep patterns to return.

Insomnia is quite normal. I also developed RLS not to long after I got clean...it is nasty. It's almost impossible to sleep with RLS...she should go to her doctor about it. There are good, non addicting meds, that work wonders. If I didn't take my meds for it, I'd never sleep.

hi. i was revoering from a severe heroin addiction for 22 days and didnt sleep AT ALL. i know exactly what you're dealing with. oxy it will probably be a little easier. i relapsed due to the fact that i couldnt sleep and it was driving me insane. i wished i would have gone to the doctor for subs or some sort of sleeping aid because it would have really helped. pretty soon u will be sleeping fine if not already. im 2 days in detox and i wish i could sleep too. what helps me is taking a hot bath or drinking camomille tea. also exercise if u can will help ALOT. im here for u and understand completely. just look forward and know if u go back it will only prolong the situation and ull have to go through it all over like my dumbass lol.

I have had pretty good luck with hypnosis CDs. Don't freak out if you are not a sleep by the end of the tape, at least you got thirty minutes of peace. Another thing that has worked for me is binaural brainwave entrainment recordings. You can find free sample mp3 on the web, try alpha or theta waves. Again it is not a knock you out drug thing, but even if you can not sleep, at least you are not freaked out about it.

Be gentle with yourselves. I just went through rough detox, alcohol mostly, and my mp3 player was my best friend.

Going through it myself right now just onto 48hrs without codiene pain medications and last night was hard but from experience before with RLS taking a hot bath as hot as you can tolerate tends to help with the nerves relaxing a bit.

I know what you're going through

I am, myself on day 9 without any heroin, but I'm starting to feel so much better, the main problem I have is sleeping. But I do know a few things that usually work.

Xanax is nice, but not always practical for everyone, it's relatively mild, but enough to do the job, the first night I simply could not sleep and I was desperate my mom gave me one of hers and I slept for an amazing FIVE HOURS!! Which at that time was remarkable.

A hot soak in the tub, as already mentioned, is wonderful, both at helping the cold feelings and with the nerves. You want it to be as hot as you can tolerate and the more you sweat the better, but stay hydrated! This sweating has also returned the color to my face and helped my temperature not be so up and down. I don't even soak my whole body, I just sit like I'm meditating in the tub and let the shear hotness on my legs and feet and waist take my aches away and heat me up, and calm me down.

Try taking melatonin every night AT THE SAME TIME every night for more than a week, persistance is key. I have heard this can help most people with insomnia, and tonight will be my own first melatonin to try and reign in my insomnia. I am an insomniac even without the withdrawal adding to it, so it's been an interesting 9 days, but I think eventually I can tackle this.

WISH ME LUCK, I am done with the worst of it, and just need a solid week of good rest to begin living again. I am excited to not be a junkie anymore.

And good luck to all of you tossing and turning or crying and wretching all night, I'm right there with you, and we'll make it out alive, it just takes determination.

Peace and Love!

PS: this is a good group of people on this site
