melatonin

I'm new to this site, and I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it - does melatonin work - how much do you take?

I'm can't take sleeping type pills.

I can fall asleep, but wake up after 2 hours and then can't get back to sleep. And if I do, I wake up in another hour.

Hey Jody,
I'm fairly new also,so if it's been brought up before, let's bring it up again for us newcomers!
When I wanted to rearrange my sleep cycle because I was staying awake until 3:00AM and then sleeping until 2:00PM with 4 kids, I went to a sleep DR. He recommended melatonin. I started on 3mg. and was told to take it 1/2 hour before I wanted to go to bed. Problem was, I kept it upstairs and I was downstairs all night. I couldn't get in the habit of going to take it. Eventually, I took it at a bedtime that was okay-1:00AM to start, and it worked really well. I have taken it off and on and found that you can build up a tolerance to it. I take 5mg. when I feel I might need help sleeping. I have never felt any side effects which is nice. I can take it or not take it. Never groggy. I also found Velarian to be extremely effective. It's sold over the counter and it is natural. Again, no side effects and I can get it at my grocery store. Hope this helped. -Ajax

Thanks - I feel like it helps me fall asleep. But then I wake up in a few hours and can't fall asleep again. But I'll keep trying it.

FWIW: The wife and I have both tried using it on multiple occasions. It had no effect on either of us.

I take a 3mg melatonin and 25-50mg of benadryl a night, and it does work quite well for me on "normal" days. The nights before "big" days however and I usually can't sleep well at all, and just avoid medication generally.

I got perscribed a PRN antidepressant that helped (my addictionologist perscribed it). I suggest talking to your doctor. They often have tools and ideas for stuff that we may not know about.

Good luck.

Jody,
I take a dual-release melatonin -- it has a quick dose side that hits right away, and a timed-release side that kicks in after a few hours. It has helped me a lot sometimes(the regular melatonin woke me up after 2-3 hrs too) I get mine from swansonvitamins.com but I think it's easy to find.

I have a friend who has great luck with Lunesta. Have you tried that?

I just checked out that website. Thanks for the tip! Have you found the dual release stuff in stores or is it only available online?

Hi, I've been a night shift worker for 20yrs, started at 1mg, for years, my husband who passed away of a cocaine od, he always was good with 1mg, i went up to 3mg, and my gyno told me about this yrs ago, I now take a product like one person described, this is awesome, i have no nightmares and they do go away eventually anyway, MELATONiX, their site, melatonix.com and the only place I find it local is Jewel Osco in ill, Walgreens does not have it at all, I only take that now, it's time released, anything from the vitamin store is crap for sure, even if it says time release, I tried that and nothing, and I never see daylight, lol, so I am impressed with this, hope this helps
