A day to remember

Today remember Matthew Shepard and his family. 13 years ago, tonight, he was brutally attacked in a hate crime that left him beaten and tied to a fence post. People united to honor Matthew and oppose anti-gay hatred--his brave family, including his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation worked tirelessly to pass the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act--now it has been U.S. law for almost 2 years. Today and everyday, we remember you, Matthew. Let us keep working to prevent acts of hate in all of our communities.

Nandm, my day of remembrance is Oct. 12th, when he died. To be honest, I'd rather forget today. I still feel a stab of deep pain when I think about him.

I'm about to start reading "The Meaning of Matthew", written by his mother Judy. I suspect it's going to be a tough one.

It is certainly not my intention to make this about me. But I can remember -and sometimes still feel- the grief and the raw fear that I felt during those days. Matthew had been beaten so badly that his face was caked with blood, and the person who found him thought that he was a scarecrow, until he spotted skin beneath tear trails beneath Matt's eyes. Nobody... f,ucking nobody deserves to be treated ... ohblah.

May he rest with angels

I just cannot imagine how anyone could hurt someone that way. it is heartbreaking, and just so angering.

God rest Matthew's soul.
