I'm looking for some nuts-and-bolts info. about the process of divorce. If STB-ex and I agree on the terms, and file, what happens next? Do we have just one court date in front of a judge? Does anyone need to be there other than the two of us? With a child involved, if we agree to a parenting plan, is it that cut and dried? Basically, I'm trying to find out if this process can be eased if the two parties agree on all the terms, because it looks like that's where we'll be. I think we can avoid lawyers, so will one be assigned to us?

I'm not sure where you are, but here in Los Angeles, the courthouse has a department that answers all these questions and helps those who are divorcing without legal representation.

I went to my legal aid dept for the county that I live in and they were a great help.

In our state, the judge almost always allocates a waiting period (60 or 90 days) before the divorce decree is finalized. Although one can do his/her own divorce in our state, the judge may ask for additional info or witnesses, in some cases. It is also common to do what you seem to be doing: an arbitration session to work out the terms as much as possible, without the expense of running everything by a lawyer.
