Dining out is one of the most popular things we do for entertainment. We often make the mistake of eating very little during the day to prepare for a big dinner. However, showing up to the restaurant starving can cause most of us to overeat. Don't skip meals the day of a dinner out or it will likely contribute to weight gain. Take any leftovers home for a quick lunch the next day.

Shalom!

Get your kids involved in the kitchen. This will help them learn about the importance of food and nutrition. Let them help with meal ideas and grocery shopping. Give them age-appropriate tasks, such as mixing or stirring. Teach them to wash their hands and clean up afterward. They will be more likely to cook healthy meals in the future if you teach them first.

Many people think that eating late at night will cause you to gain weight. The truth is, it is how MUCH you eat not WHEN you eat that makes a difference. To help curb late-night hunger, make sure you are eating 3 meals and 3 snacks daily to keep your hunger in check.. Make sure your meals include both carbohydrates and protein to keep you full longer. Always keep healthy snacks in the house for late-night munching.

Do you have gastric reflux? Seven million Americans do. Some symptoms associated with gastric reflux are: heartburn, difficulty swallowing, or regurgitating of stomach acid. If you think you may have gastric reflux, you should consult your doctor. To help alleviate some of the symptoms try eating small, frequent meals, sitting up or standing for 60 minutes after eating, and avoid eating two hours before you go to bed.

that's right, Teach.. and it helps to raise the head of the bed a bit higher.. but not so high that you slide off at the foot of the bed onto the floor!!!
I used to have reflux, especially when pregnant but haven't had it in years. I practice the tips you mentioned in to reduce symptoms.
I really like this thread...

Did you know that the average American eats 193 sandwiches per year? A sandwich can be a very healthy meal, depending on how you build it. Use whole grain bread, lean meats, low-fat mayonnaise or other low-fat dressing, and finish it off with some fresh vegetables such as tomato, lettuce, onions, and bell peppers. Choose a side of veggies or fruit instead of chips.

Spice Up Your Life! Are your meals getting boring? There are a few simple ways to add some excitement. Add new twists to your recipes. Fresh lime and lemon juice are enhancers for any meat or seafood. Dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar makes the perfect low fat marinade for beef. Get to know spices such as rosemary, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric. They are an excellent flavor enhancer to soups, stews, and stirfrys and can fit in any healthy meal plan. Experiment to see which one is your favorite!

Grilling this weekend? Don't forget the veggies! To make those veggies taste better than ever, drizzle a light coat of olive oil and seasoning over sweet pepper, zucchini, or onions before placing them on the grill. Pair the veggies with lean beef or salmon steak for a delicious and healthy meal.

Fruit of the Month: Persimmons. A persimmon is an orange- colored fruit that is similar in shape to a tomato. When ripe, it has a rich, sweet flavor. They are high in vitamin A, important for vision and for healthy skin, vitamin C, which helps with infection and disease prevention, and fiber. They are tasty on their own or are a perfect addition to a fruit salad, smoothies, or even your morning cereal. If you have never had one, look for one this month and give it a whirl.

Well, I've never had one, but, I think I'll give it a try...

Navigating Your Way on Columbus Day. For some of us, Columbus Day weekend is a travel weekend. Be sure to keep your eating habits in check while you are out and about. Wherever you go, throw some fruit or an energy bar in your bag as a quick snack. While dining out, ask your server to bring you half of the meal and box the rest. In this way, you can still enjoy your meal without going overboard on calories. Planning ahead is the best way to keep yourself on track.

Halloween Hankering. Getting ready for Halloween? Here are some tips to make your Halloween healthy and safe for your waistline. Wait until the last minute to purchase candy to give out. In this way, it is not around the house tempting you. If you do end up purchasing candy prior to Halloween and want a piece, only have one piece. Allowing yourself to enjoy candy but not overdoing it can help you get into the spirit, while still keeping to your weight loss plan.

Good idea!

Hydration Hints. Do you sometimes feel you are just not thirsty? You may not realize it, but you still need to drink water. Fluid is essential for body processes including digestion, perspiration, and organ functions. Make a goal of drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Keep a bottle of water with you and refill frequently. If you have a long day out of the house, fill water bottles with water and put them in the freezer. By the time you get to your destination, your water will be nice and cold.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women, if you haven't been screened for breast cancer, now is the time. There are many things women can do to lower their risk of breast cancer. Increasing fiber intake along with increasing fruit and vegetable intake may be a protective factor. Limiting daily fat intake by eating lean meats and limiting alcohol may also reduce risk. Lastly, being physically active and maintaining a healthy body weight helps prevent many cancers, including breast cancer.

Go Green! Green vegetables are high in many vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, and folic acid. There is a lot of goodness packed in these all natural foods. Maintaining a varied vitamin intake will help you improve your immune function, blood clotting, and eyesight. Green vegetables are also high in fiber, which will help maintain weight by making you feel more full and satisfied with your meals. Make a goal of eating 4 to 7 servings of vegetables a day.

Feeling Nutty? Indulging in nuts is a healthy way to add protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals into your meals. Nuts are cholesterol-free and are a source of "good" or unsaturated fat, which when included in your diet every day may improve cardiovascular health. Nuts are a great addition to a meal plan when eaten in the right portion size. The rule of thumb is that one serving of nuts fits in the palm of a cupped hand. If you are unsure, weigh one ounce of nuts on a food scale.

Weighing is so important today. We've lost all sense of portion due to the super sizing at restaurants. There's one way I can hope to regain a sense of control over my eating patterns.

Happy Halloween! Halloween is a time when sweets are in abundance. Keeping control of the sweets can be a challenge, but using these simple strategies can help. Right before trick-or-treating, make a healthy meal for you and your family. If you are full, you will be less likely to sneak candy. If you have leftover candy, or the kids come home with a bushel of it, pick a few of your favorites and put the rest of it away. Save the candy for an after dinner treat during the rest of the week.

Feeling less of a saint? Sometimes holidays can sabotage your exercise and weight loss routine. Do you see cupcakes, brownies and candy everywhere? If you are feeling bad about overindulging, don't get discouraged. Use this time to get back on track. Plan an extra day at the gym and increase your water intake. Reassess your meal plan and make more of an effort to cut portion sizes and increase fruits and vegetables. Taking stock and getting back on your program can help you meet your goals.

Visit the Pumpkin Patch. Pumpkin is a very versatile and nutritious vegetable. Mostly seen this season carved or in pies, pumpkins can be served in other ways to provide a healthy addition to your meal plan. Pumpkins can be roasted, baked and boiled. You can make pumpkin soup out of this vegetable or just eat it mashed as a side dish. Pumpkin is a very good source of beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A promoting healthy eyes, circulations and organs. Pick up a pumpkin today.

Fruit of the Month: Plantains. Plantains are a part of the banana family and look like a big banana. Plantains can be grilled and served as a side dish, they can be added to soups and stews, can be mashed like a potato or added to desserts. Plantains are a healthy fruit because they are low in sodium, high in vitamin A, which helps promote healthy eyes, and potassium for normal fluid balance, as well as fiber. Try adding plantains as a side dish to your Thanksgiving meal!

I tried plantains this past year while living in the city. Many of our students eat them regularly. I never heard of them until I moved here. They're made a few different ways; sometimes they are good; othertimes, not so good.
But, I'd recommend them. Just get a decent recipe!
Hmmm...the hispanic kids around here tend to eat them fried. Probably not what this weight loss tip had in mind! :nono:

Sample Some Soy. Have you ever tried soy nuts? Soy nuts are dry roasted soybeans. They are a nutritious snack that can be purchased plain or in a variety of flavors. Soy nuts can be eaten on its own, on top of salad or mixed into soups. Soy nuts are a good source of protein, B vitamins, which help maintain cells and are full of fiber. The FDA recommends 25 grams of soy a day, along with a low fat diet, to reduce the risk of heart disease. Crack into a bag of soy nuts today

Thanksgiving is Near. This holiday is associated with food and weight gain. It has been said that most people gain 15 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's. However, enjoying the holidays can be fun and fit. Use these strategies to eat healthy and stay on track. Eat a small snack before Thanksgiving dinner and you will be less likely to overeat. Then gather the crew together and go for a post dinner walk to help burn off calories. Continue with exercise this month to help you stay on track.

Healthy Hanukkah. With eight nights of possible indulging ahead of you, plan a healthy Hanukah meal to cut the fat and make you feel good. Roast chicken instead of the traditional beef brisket, which has fat that cannot easily be cut away. Choose healthy oil such as canola or peanut oil to cook latkes. Have plenty of low fat vegetable dishes as a side. When dessert comes, choose your favorite and have small portion. In this way you can have a healthy celebration that won't add to your waistline.

Spotlight on Pomegranates. They are a fruit that is the size of an orange and have pulpy, juicy seeds on the inside. Pomegranate seeds can be eaten on their own or used in entrees and desserts. The juice can be used for marinades and dressings. This versatile fruit is rich in Vitamin C, folic acid and antioxidants. The disease preventing health benefits of antioxidants are why you may have seen pomegranate juice in your local grocery store. Just peel and eat to get the goodness of pomegranates.
