Thumbs up Weight loss tip

Weight Loss Tip
Brought to you by Bally Total Fitness
http://www.ballynutrition.com

It's likely that the scale will not always move in the right direction, especially right after the holidays.. However, this doesn't mean you have to give up and return to your old ways. Make a list of all the positive things you're doing. Then make a list of ways you could gauge your progress other than your weight. Have your body fat measured. You could be decreasing your body fat even though you are not seeing big changes on the scale. And remember that increased energy and sense of well-being is also progress.

Hope this helps!
Shalom!

Glad to do so, Pony. I'm struggling myself, now that I've been told I'm right over the line into diabetes land...
And the holidays certainly don't help with weight and sugar issues, for sure.
I have been going to the gym regularly. I got a bit off track with the holidays, but, more on than off still. Exercise is supposed to help with sugar, I understand.
I also quit smoking! It's now Four weeks, 12 hours, 16 minutes and 42 seconds smoke free. That's 1140 cigarettes not smoked, saving $313.62. Life saved: 3 days, 23 hours, 0 minutes.
And because I've quit smoking, I'm not drinking near as much. I had hoped to stop completely during the beginning of my quit, but, that hasn't panned out. And yes, I know it's not good for my sugar too...
But, I'm still not smoking! And I am exercising!
So, for today, I'm going to focus on the positives!

Shalom!

Yes, the exercise and watching what you eat should help with the diabetes.

Staying focused on the positive will help you get from one day to the next. Quitting everything all at once can be overwhelming.......take it in stages and prioritize and ther is much better success rate.

Congrats on the no smoking! Love the numbers..lol

My way of keeping track and rewarding myself, LOL!

I agree with you too. Quitting everything at once is overwhelming. I'm trying to develop a more healthy lifestyle. I didn't get where I am overnight; I won't change it overnight either. So, one step at a time.

Shalom!

Wow Teach,
This is exactly what I am trying to do with different issues. I have sat down and made my plan for a more healthy lifestyle, a couple of days ago and I am trying to implement the changes slowly but steadily, so as not to overwhem myself and get discouraged and quit. I'm glad to hear that you are too.
I think that it is just, oh so awesome, that you have been able to stay away from the cigs that long. I'm sure that you remember me posting about losing my brother a couple of years ago to lung cancer from smoking. He was 49yrs. and 2months old to the day, when he died. I stood by his bedside with the rest of my family and held him and whispered to him while he was passing away. I will never forget the minute that he took his last breath. I have alot of smokers around me and even experiencing some of this with me didn't make them stop. I don't preach to them though because I have my own issues. But I am so proud of you and You have every right to be proud of yourself.

Great to read that you have managed to not smoke for more than 4 weeks. It is a change that you will ever regret A few years ago I did the stupid thing and started smoking because my mates had started, I used to crave ciggarettes, especially when I saw others smoking. One time I was smoking while waiting for a bus with my friends and a man (probaly aged 70+) spoke to us and said it was the biggest mistake of his life to smoke because he now has health problems. I think that was when I was shocked and knew it was time to stop. Weeks after I gave up (I'm trying to give up bad food now, it is harder when you've done something all or most of your life, just gotta live healthier ), I hardly ever wanted a ciggarette, now I wish they were banned. I think that the you will keep going in the right direction. You have gained more than you have lost (courage...) I know positive thinking is the way forward!

(((Teach)))

I do not know if you are aware that tobacco is cured with sugar....I am thinking that once the holiday food is gone and with this stop smoking plan you have going on if your bloodsugar might fall into a more normal range.

The cure for diabetes lies in stopping the use of refined sugar and other refined carbs...I am praying that you can get your bloodsugar within normal range without meds...

Wow, Thanks, everyone!

I know when we quit smoking, out blood sugar goes down, Splendra. What I've read is that nicotine interfers with insulin. I'm figuring the sugar is down already due to the exercising and small changes in eating and drinking. But, there's a bigger picture too.

Today, I go to a nutritionist. I'm going to see what they have to say. I *know* what I'm supposed to do, hehehe. I just got into some very lazy eating habbits, and now have to fix that.

I still like what Pony said; staying positive and prioritizing. That seems like the healthiest strategy to take with the greatest likelihood of success to me too. And while I do want to get more healthy for the new year, staying quit smoking is my first priority.

Thanks for the support!
Shalom!

Hey Teach,
I would love to hear anything that you might want to share, that you learned from the nutritionist today. I'm sure that everyone here would be very interested. I hope that it went great for you. ((((Hugs))))

Nina;
I'm afraid I'm VERY disappointed with the nutritionist I saw. I will let my doc know about it when I see him too.
She gave me an exchange book, took out her plastic foods to show portion size; asked if I had any questions and made one simple daily food plan.
On top of that, she insisted I had to eat 6-11 servings of carbs a day. I told her if I did that, I would blow up like a cow. I told her I was addicted to carbs and crave more the more I eat. I may as well have spoken to the wall.
It was a worthless trip.
When I'm ready, I'm going back on the Scarlesdale Medical Diet. I lost 40 lbs @ 6 years ago, and kept it offf for about 4 years. Then, I just got lazy. hehehe.
I am not one who is anti carb, believe me. I think the atkins diet is dangerous and fool hardy, especially since he died obese and with heart problems. Hello? lol!
But, as I told her, I KNOW my body. If I were to take that many carbs, they would be burrying me real soon! Triglycerides would go through the roof! So, I'll stick to low fat, low carb Scarlesdale.
I can't belief she gets PAID to do what she does! Man, did I get in the wrong line of work!
Sorry I couldn't have been more help. But, believe me, I'm more disappointed than you are!

Shalom!

Teach,
I'm sorry that it went so bad. Sounds like a waste of your valuable time and that you know more about nutrition that she does. She either needs to go back to school or go into another line of work. I don't know anything about the diet you mentioned. I have heard of it of course, but have never heard any details about it. Keep us up on your progress, okay?

This diet has been around since the sixties, I think. It's low fat, (not no fat), and low carb, (not no carb). It allows all of the food groups; there's just a moderation of those fats and carbs. Easy to follow and this website has more additions to Tarnower's original diet, (I've got the book from way back then).

Interesting side note; Tarnower was murdered by his live in lover when she discovered he was having an affair. Jean Harris was in jail for a long time... Anyway, his book is dedicated to her!

Take a look at it. It's pretty easy to follow. And filling; you'll never be hungry.

Shalom!

Thanks Teach,
I looked at the site that you provided and I have decided that I need to come and stay with you so that you can guide me through this. First of all, I am a old-fashioned country girl from Texas, where you know, everything is BIG!!!! Meaning, when I read the helpings and what was suggested, it looked like something that I would swallow and it would hit the bottom of my empty stomach with an echoing thud.
I need you to do the shopping and preparing and don't let me have any access to any other food. I think that this may be the only way that I could live on this diet. I have no doubt that I would lose weight on it. No really, I will print it out and try to implement some of it into my diet or way of eating. Someone will have to come and lift me out of the bed though, if I need to do something, because I will be like a wet wimp noodle as far as energy and strength goes. You are one strong person, in so many ways. And this I do know. (((((((((HUGS))))))))))
