5 years of abstinence

Well I had 5 years of abstinence and picked up booze. $ years later I am going through detox from booze with 150 extra pounds. UGH. I want to stay sober more then anything. I have been using sugar to help with my detoxing symptoms. And I do not feel clean, at all the sugar is weighing me down. But being so sick is worse. Any ideas?

Joe -

Welcome and thanks for your honesty. I would recommend talking to your doctor. I don't have any advice regarding detoxing with sugar. I just wanted to welcome you.

Be honest with your dr if you have not already, believe me they have heard it all already. I remember when I told my dr everything about my using and she was standing there writing and writing in my file and I was thinking 'oh great now she is going to judge me' she was always so nice. Then she put down the pen, pulled up a stool and we talked about how now I had to learn about my body and being sober, it was awesome. Be honest with your dr, it will help I promise.

I gained 60 lbs in sobriety and it is slowly coming off with eating right and exercise, but during detox you have to be careful.

God Bless and good luck.

Joe,

I'm not an expert but I have heard that alcohol does turn to sugar in the system. I also heard that there is a vitamine that has been used to curb the addiction of sugar in the system. That might be something to ask your doctor about. Like I said I only heard this, I haven't tried it out for myself.

welcome and keep on posting.

interesting

I've just found this website not too long ago. I've been sober for 2 1/2 years. A woman I sponsor in AA has a eating disorder so I was actually here reading other's posts to understand the eating thing more. I'm amazed...truly amazed. I don't really have an eating disorder but I do have a weight problem...mostly from the not drinking and I quit smoking in October. I think a lot of what I read will not only help me to understand my sponsee but it seems it's also had an impact on me! Thanks.
And Joe...stay sober!
