Hello, I just had to put the meanest, ugliets, looking face for my icon. If you haven't read any of my posts already, I am sort of a jack of all trades. I suffer from manic depression (bipolar disorder) with acute social and generalized anxiety..Xanax being the drug they put me on for this. I also...was(sniff)...a clean outgoing special *life is great* kind of person for 36 days. Yes, 36 days clean from opium and pain killers. I really feel down in the dumps right now but that isn't the reason why I came to chat on this board. I have A LOT of weight problems which my psychiatrist just keeps saying that its all just mental...which it is. I just have so much stress in my life that I LOSE WEIGHT literally doing nothing. And no, this isn't some sort of great special ability I have for those overweights out there...hell I WISH that I could be at least just a little overweight. I would settle for normal weight though. The thing is that I never really feel THAT HUNGRY. I eat three meals a day though, but thats it, nothing more. And my metabolisim is like super sonic WHICH SUCKS!! I hate being skinny!! Or am I?? I have two questions that I hope someone could help me with...is 5'9 and 134lbs. (male) considered like REALLY skinny? DO I need to REALLY look into some sort of clinic? My other question is sort of important and always lingers on my mind. Before being diagnosed with bipolar they said I had ADD (attention deficet disorder) at age 12 and loaded me up on speed (amphetamines, methylphenidate) up to about age 18. That is 6 years of taking low doses of speed (appetite suppressant) EVERY DAY/4 TIMES A DAY. Any docotr will also tell you that they do not know the long term effects of stimulants given to children at such young ages which kind of ties in with my perdicament. I had a normal weight set before ever being put on these drugs, my weight would go up and down, up and down, etc. Now that I am 22 and not on any of those pills I still go through the same cycle. Something wrong with my appatite receptors? Just my bipolar? The prescripton drugs? The stress? (For when I take a Xanax for my stress I eat and eat and eat becaus eI don't feel so strung out)...any sort of comment would be greatly appreciated. Go ahead and yell at me to if you want, I just feel like ****...wanna die |

So glad you came here for support!! I'm not a pharmacology person, so I have no input for you about that, but just want to say to you: Eat when you're hungry! That's all! If you are eating when your body is telling you to, that's the important thing. If you were hungry and not eating, that would be a different thing. My son is 7, and skinny as a rail. I let him eat whatever he wants. Once, at a mom's group, someone asked me if I was worried that he was underweight. I told her no, because that was exactly what my husband looked like when he was young. We're rooting for you! Keep coming back, it really does get better. God bless, Pray Lady |

I lived with and fed well, a 5'10" 125 pound guy for 10 years. And he wasn't really skinny, just slim.He burned all his calories off dancing, we went almost every night. He wanted to gain weight so he started lifting weights and drinking protein powder. He gained 20 pounds in about 5 months doing this but as soon as he stopped lifting, he lost weight. He never used steroids, you couldn't even get this guy to drink a beer. BTW, I am 5'10" and I never could get under 180 pounds, although I constantly fasted and exercised. |

Hello joeyf1232002, It sounds like you've got a lot of sh*t on your plate, pardon the pun. Body Mass Index, what's used to determine weight to height ratio, is a general approximation. If you see a BMI weight chart, it should have printed on the chart that individual differences should be discussed with physicians. There are many types of body frames. I'm 5'3" and I can't go below 120. I know this because, at one point in my life, I went down to 89 and was hospitalized. It's not unusual to eat when you're stressed. That's why many of us are here. We reach for what ever we can that will make us feel better. The difficult part is learning how to reach out for things that are good for us. Old habits are hard to break. I agree with Pray Lady. Try to only eat when you're hungry. This won't work all the time at first. I've learned it's important to count each and every victory, each and every first, no matter how big or small. We do it with failures, right? The trick, a V E R Y hard one, is to learn how to do it with successes. I'm glad you're here. Welcome, firefly |
