There have been reports that dopamine agonists such as pramipexole, (Mirapex), and ropinirole, (Requip) - drugs used to treat both Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome - can increase a person's desire to engage in behaviors such as pathological gambling or compulsive shopping. Researchers believe that these desires may be due to drug-induced changes in dopamine levels. Dopamine is a natural chemical that affects parts of your brain involved in motivation, emotion and reward behaviors. Strong stimulation of these areas may lead to compulsive, pleasure-seeking behaviors in some people. Although this side effect is believed to be uncommon, it can develop even with relatively low doses. Keep track of how the drug affects you. If you begin to have strong urges to gamble or engage in other unusual behaviors, tell your doctor. There are alternative treatments for restless legs syndrome that don't affect dopamine levels. Once the dopamine agonist is discontinued, compulsive behaviors usually stop. From the Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource: Tools for Healthier Lives December 2007 Volume 11, Number 12 Shalom!
