"I can only imagine what it will be like, when I walk by Your side... I can only imagine, what my eyes will see, when Your Face is before me! I can only imagine. I can only imagine. Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still? Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing 'Hallelujah!'? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine! I can only imagine! I can only imagine, when that day comes, when I find myself standing in the Son! I can only imagine, when all I will do, is forever, forever worship You! I can only imagine! I can only imagine! Yeah! I can only imagine! Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel? I can only imagine! Yeah! I can only imagine!! Only imagine!!! I can only imagine. I can only imagine, when all I do is forever, forever worship You! I can only imagine." |

MercyMe had been a rock band for eight years when its infectious ode to heaven, "I Can Only Imagine," began saturating Christian radio. After spending weeks at number one on the charts, it garnered Dove awards for both "Pop Song" and "Song of the Year," as well as a "Songwriter of the Year" accolade for lead singer Bart Millard. Almost immediately, the group's 2001 debut album, Almost There, was certified gold, and thousands of churches were using "I Can Only Imagine" in worship. The Dallas-based band—which also includes lead guitarist Mike Scheuchzer, drummer Robby Shaffer, bassist Nathan Cochran, and keyboardist Jim Bryson—knew their first hit was something special, but they never "imagined" it impacting people the way it has. Millard hopes both listeners and worshipers recognize that, "The song is not about crossing our fingers and hoping that God is out there somewhere, but it's about resting easier at night knowing that there is one true, living God who is crazy in love with us so much so that he desires us to spend eternity with him." Millard's lyrics grew out of a period of tremendous personal pain. In 1991, his father died after a long battle with cancer. When people told him that his dad would choose heaven over coming back, the 18-year-old began thinking about what his dad was experiencing in heaven. After that, he found himself repeating the phrase "I can only imagine." He began writing it on napkins, paper bags, and anything he could find. The phrase resonated in his heart and gave him the strength and hope he needed to move on. Somehow, wondering about that awesome moment when he too would lay eyes on the Lord helped dull the pain of losing his father. This isn't a permanent separation, he told himself. One day we'll be enjoying God's presence together. Years later, in 1999, when MercyMe was writing songs for its freshman project, Millard stumbled across that simple phrase—"I can only imagine"—in an old notebook. About ten minutes later, the song was written. "People say it's amazing that it was written in ten minutes, when really it had been on my heart for almost ten years," Millard says. In fact, not many days go by that he still doesn't ask himself those questions that form the chorus of his song: Surrounded by your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still? Will I stand in your presence, or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all? "I have faith that Christ is real," Millard adds. "Therefore, I ask him questions." Questions for which every believer will one day receive the answers. |

I have tears in my eyes from reading that. My pastor and his wife knew a young man who taught the youth this song. He passed away at the young age of 35 and the boys sang this song at his funeral. I have tears in my eyes now. I can only imagine!

To listen to a song and be touched is wonderful. I like that song very much. To listen to a song with the reason behind the writing adds so much depth to the words of the song. Thank you for doing that sharing. Silent Night has always been a favorite song of mine...even before becoming a Christian. Listening to songs I have heared or sung in my past and now because I have read the bible, I understand the meaning behind the words in the song... What depth so many songs have. Silent Night was a song written in a matter of minutes. A last effort before the service started. When the preacher had gotten to the church, they found the organ was broken that Christmas eve. A guitar and a song written in the room off to the side became a world class classic for Christmas around the world. The sees fire of Christmas eve in the world war between the German and British troops on the front line also was started with a Christmas tree with candles on it and the song Silent Night being sung by the German soldiers. Silent Night was written by a minister and his helper in the Austrian Alps. A little church in the snow peaks, a minister that needed music for the church service, and a song that stopped the blood shed for but a moment some 20 years later in a world war was the result. Never know what we do today... just how God will use it tomorrow.

I had the pleasure of seeing Mercy Me, Amy Grant and Bebo Norman in concert earlier this year. You could really feel God's presence in the auditorium. It was the BEST concert I have ever been to! Mercy Me's music is absolutely incredible and inspiring. If any of you don't have this CD or their newest one, I highly recommend them. Each and every song is filled with blessings and hope. And, it is so sweet to hear my kids singing these songs with great feeling. Thanks for sharing this.

| you guys are absolutely wonderful!! I hate to admit it but I had a bad day!!lol I am new to this site and have been going to aa and alano meetings and didnt' even pay attention that this was here!! I have been walking with Lord since 1996 off and on. He stopped the world and pick me up and sat me in a 3mo.christian rehab drinking, drugs anything i could get. I fel in love with Jesus there but yrs later the world got me again. This past June 1st I quit drinking and drugging and started reading the word, Joyce Meyer Beauty for Ashes, Charles Stanley Finding Peace and a book called A womans journey to the heart of God.! Boy have I had one!!Once again he stopped the world and sat me in Boone NC at christian counseling center very expensive but he paid for it. I learned how to give him all my pain, wounds, open sores, unforgiveness for being sexually abused by father. I now know God as My Daddy! I am Daddy's Little Girl!! Oh how wonderful. To know he is my everything!! This is and has been my favorite song. Daddy sent me here for this reason he knows I am struggling right now. Thank you so much for being here!Blessed2 |
