A Right Heart

Key Passage: Mark 7:1-23
Topic: Holiness

And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" (Mark 7:6-7, ESV)

Have you ever been disappointed by a movie which promised "action, adventure and excitement," but only delivered a wasted evening? Ever picked up a book with an intriguing cover and gripping title, only to find the pages filled with weak characters and plot holes bigger than Texas?

Jesus must have felt like that when He looked at the Pharisees. Everything on the outside looked impressive. They wore nice long robes and kept themselves meticulously clean. They were always visible in a crowd and quick to say that they did everything for the glory of God. But when Jesus looked at their hearts--their motivations--He read a very different story.

For the Pharisees, religion had become a business: a set of rules and regulations that were designed to make people behave in a certain way. What they didn't realize is that they had long since pushed God out of their religion. They still talked about God a lot, but everything they did was for themselves and the good of the Pharisees.

God doesn't want a religion with you. He wants love and worship that comes from your heart; not a love that's forced out, but one that can't be contained. Love like that doesn't come overnight, which is why He's inviting you right now to spend some time with Him. Get to know Him better, and then make your choice.
