Key Passage: Mark 6:30-44
Topic: Jesus; God's Care

When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. (Mark 6:34, ESV)

Wait a minute! Sheep...a shepherd...going ashore. Is this some kind of coastal farming situation or what? Is Jesus really comparing people to wooly animals?

The first one is up for grabs. But the answer to the second question is a definite yes! But why? Why that comparison?

Welcome to Sheep 101. It's pretty simple. Sheep are programmed to flock together--kind of like women when they all go to the restroom at the same time. And if one sheep runs off a cliff, the rest won't take a vote first--they'll head in the same direction. Sheep are followers. That's why a shepherd is a must. The shepherd guards and protects them, leads them and looks out for the best interest of the entire flock.

Jesus isn't beating around the bush here. He sees that thousands of people are wandering aimlessly in no clear direction, and that breaks His heart. So, He takes action.

Mark doesn't mention what was said, but Jesus always points His listeners to the truth. Truth always delivers purpose, clarity of thought and wholeness. It fills empty hearts, strengthens the weak and breathes life into exhausted souls.

Jesus also met physical needs on this particular day, which shows that He's interested in the whole person. But people have spiritual needs too--and those can't be ignored.

When was the last time you went to Jesus and asked Him to come into your situation and "shepherd" like only He can? Why not admit that you're a sheep who needs a shepherd to look out for you.
