Question wondering....

I'm not sure what I totally believe, I grew up in a Christian family. I want to believe it all but I have my doubts. As far as recovery goes I've found Celebrate Recovery to be really helpful. The other day I prayed and God helped me get through the day without using. I haven't read my bible in a while and I would like to get back to it. I don't know what I'm looking for from this post, just want to get closer to God but don't really know how too. Anyone have any advice or whats helped them in recovery. I could use some prayer just for being able to stay clean. Someone told me can only stay clean through God and well if that's what I need then I need to do something about it. I hope to become closer to God and trust him more. I want to get better . Last Celebrate Recovery they talked about " Do you want to be healed?" and sometimes I wonder if I really do want to get healed . I need to do whatever it takes for recovery whatever God wants but I don't know how to do it. i want to want to not use but it's hard because I still want to use. I also want to know God better but I have a lot of questions. I'm really hoping God can help me. I just wish I could give my life over fully but I struggle with that , surrendering everything to God but I know I need to do that.

Matthew 6:24

uses the term money

It could well be substituted for any thing else as well. Drugs, sex, food anything we place ahead of our Lord

Hi Pinkgurl! Nice to meet you! Thanks for posting!

I found my relationship with God growing in AA. I'm an alcoholic and an addict. I was raised believing in God and going to church with my grandparents. My parents were hippies and didn't attend chuch regulary. (please ignore spelling and grammar....I have a migraine, have had one for 5 days now) Anyway, I started working the 12 steps of AA in AA. I could do step 1 and 2 pretty easily, but how could I do number 3 ? How could I turn my life over to something I couldn't see, touch or even really understand? My sponsor told me that as long as I was willing to do this, then my ability to do it would come with time. How true. I've been sober almost 6 years now and am just getting very close to God. I've started attending Celebrate Recovery and find myself loving it. I still need my AA meetings as well, but it doesn't seem to be as frequent of a need as it once was. I'm attending a church my family and I just love and I'm now teaching a sunday school class for 5 year old kids. We found a church whose "motto" for lack of a better word is to "help others become who God intends for them to be"...they even have the Celebrate Recovery there.

So, in a nutshell, my ability to completely give myself to God came over time. I just did what AA suggested and that was to (1) Thank my higher power (whom I never had an issue with as calling God) for keeping me sober the day before and to help me stay sober that day; (2) go to a meeting; (3) talk to my sponsor or someone else in recovery; (4) read something from the Big Book of AA or other recovery related material; (5) hit a meeting; (6) Thank God at night for keeping me sober that day. I did those things over and over and also went about life...working, being a mom, being a wife, etc. and before I knew it, I was able to really turn my life over to Him. Please don't beat yourself up if you can't do it right away. It takes time. The important thing is that you are WILLING to do it and keep taking the necessary steps to stay sober. God works in us as long as we stay open to Him.

I hope I've been of some help to you! It's been helpful for me to type these words.

God is Good!! One day at a time, you'll get there Pinkgurl!! Have faith!!

(((((Big Hugs)))))

In His love,
Kym

I really appreciate that part because I know for me there was no overnight transformation. I think God is molding me over a lifetime. I don't think we have to figure it all out today.

Thanks everyone for your advice I know knowing God is a process and I have to keep myself open to him and trust him to help me. The other day I prayed too God and he helped me get through the day without using provided me a way out. I've been clean now 3 days going on 4 longest stretch since I got out of IP so hoping this stretch with go much longer. God is good.

I started by getting a version of the Bible I was comfortable with (life recovery), & starting with the New Testament. 15-20 minutes a day. It was a beginning, & SO MUCH worth it! You will be QUITE surprised. I was tired of having to take someone's else's word on what the Bible said, which was confusing, to say the least, so I decided to find out for MYSELF. Then, take it from there.....

Hey Pink, I am so proud of you, GOD is the best healer of them all. You will see. Just keep on praying, and listening, and waiting for his rewards. They will come, I promise you. I have never asked for something in a prayer that wasn't given to me. Faith is a beautiful thing, and GOD is the greatest gift of all.
