| Live in Peace
You are reading the daily devotional from NotReligion. Key Passage: Luke 2:25-35 Topic: New Life "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word." (Luke 2:29, ESV) The first words we hear from Simeon are some of the strangest and unexpected words ever spoken. "Now I can depart (or die) in peace." Die in peace? How is that even possible? And Simeon said this just after meeting the baby Jesus. For Simeon, peace came because the greatest longing of his heart was now fulfilled. Luke says that he "was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him" (Luke 2:25, ESV). Simeon lived his whole life waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. It's a sign of his devotion and love of God that he recognized the Messiah when he saw Him even as an infant, barely a week old. What an incredible perspective we get from giving our lives to God! God is performing miracles every day in this world that far too many people miss. Simeon saw God Himself born as a little child. The Messiah had come, so now this devout man was able to die peacefully. We can have the same peace too because it's still possible to meet Jesus. Simeon said something more: That through Jesus, many will be raised up and find joy, while others will not (Luke 2:34-35). It's through Jesus that we can be restored to a relationship with God. And Jesus can give us peace about our death (and eternity with Him), as well as peace for this life too. But that's your choice to make. Will you meet Him today? © 2008 NotReligion
