| Just Read It
You are reading the daily devotion from Notreligion. Key Passage: Acts 17:10-15 Topic: God; Obedience/Discipleship Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. (Acts 17:11, ESV) The Bible: Most of us know it's the only book God ever wrote. Reading: It's probably safe to say that a high percentage of us know how. But reading the Bible? Do you do that? Or do you secretly hope no one asks you how much you read it? When you combine the words of God (the Bible) with a common skill (reading), the only logical result is that millions could be spending significant time soaking up spiritual truth--thus creating a massive movement of people living out God-centered lives. What a concept! But the reality is that many in biblical times and many of us now simply don't see the importance of taking in God's Word. We're content taking bits and pieces from our pastor or favorite Christian author--but that's an impersonal way to nurture a relationship with God. The Jews in Thessalonica didn't see the importance of studying the Scriptures for themselves; they were content with their traditions. But in Berea, it was quite a different story. Paul and Silas were so encouraged to see Jews eagerly reading Scripture--taking ownership of God's words. They wanted to understand, by their own examination, all they heard preached by Paul and Silas. But let's come back to today. If we're lazy about reading God's Word, maybe we need to remind ourselves just who God is. In a dating relationship, a person hangs on every precious word coming from his or her beloved. There's an excitement and anticipation leading up to every moment spent together. So why not with God? For an eye-opening and life-changing experience, try combining the study of God's Word with the intention of applying it to your life. Do as the Bereans did. NotReligion - Home
