| Bigger or Better
August 14, 2008 Key Passage: Matthew 13:31-32 He put another parable before them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field." (Matthew 13:31, ESV) In our society we tend to think bigger is better. You can super-size fast food, buy "jumbo" products and constantly upgrade your computer's gigabytes and megahertz. Even many Christians have bought into the idea that size is what's important. Jesus tells us that in the latter days, even the kingdom of heaven will become large. He compares it to a small mustard seed that grows into a tree and provides a roosting place for the birds of the air (Matthew 13:32). However, this verse falls between Jesus' teaching about false believers (the tares of Matthew 13:24-30) and false doctrine (the leaven of Matthew 13:33). What Jesus is warning about is false growth. Today we see a lot of "megachurches" with superstar pastors. But this growth is often bought with a heavy price. While not all large churches are guilty, sometimes the Gospel is watered down to make it more attractive to the "birds of the air" and the focus shifts from God's Word to personal experience. Doctrines which may make unbelievers uncomfortable are played down while "feel good" theology is played up. So don't be overly impressed with numbers. While it's certainly true that we want to introduce the Savior to as many people as possible, changing our message to attract the crowds is not the way to do it. And if you're part of a smaller congregation, don't be envious of the megachurch on the other side of town. Remember, God equates success with faithfulness, not with size. . Iv been christian for 2 years and the first year I was sober adn followed the lord whole heartidly wherever he took me, but some huge trials came into my life and I began to backslide. I began to listen to people who had this watered down sence of christianity and I was carried away by another doctrine.

Luckily the lord didnt give up on me and as I continued to read his word he convicted me and helped me to realize the error of my ways. Iv learned to constantly seek his advice through prayer and reading the bible and through this god is giving me strength although I am oh so week. YAY DAY NUMBER 4 of sober living!
