| Having trouble turning my will and my life over to God
I've asked God to take over my will and my life but don't 'feel' any different. I want to know if I'm doing it wrong or what. I want Him to take over my life but can't tell if He's done so. This is a hard step for me, as I have always been independent and doing for myself. I want to know how to turn mywill and my life over to God 'for real'. How do I do that to feel a difference in my life?

I believe that is a day by day, moment by moment choice. I do not think it is something that we can do just once. We are all still going to sin - daily. With every decision we make - no matter how big, or how small - we need to go to Him. Pray over it, read the Bible daily, make sure that our decisions are His decisions. There are a lot of decisions and choices we make every day to give it a broad one time choice. I think we start to feel different when we start recognizing His will & choosing it over ours in our daily lives. I believe that it is an action that we are to take constantly. It is the choices we make in our choices to use or not to use, our choices on how we interact with our families, our choices on what we watch, listen to, etc., choices on how we react when we are angry, choices on what words come out of our mouths - - - the list can go on & on. When we turn our lives over to God, He begins to work in our lives. Every part of it. The more we seek Him, the more He works in us. Everything we do is to be to the glory of God.

I heard the change in us is similar to turning a large ship around. It takes quite a few miles to change direction and it's not a quick process. We are changed from glory to glory. That takes time. I doubt you are doing anything "wrong." After all, we've all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We cannot do anything to earn His grace and mercy. I found when I asked God to change me (something I cannot do by my own willpower), He started working in my life. Granted, it seems like a slow process to me. But I'm finite and here for a short time. God is eternal, so His timing is a lot different than mine!

Saying the words is one thing. Believe in your heart that God will do what He says He will do is another. We start with a simple asking and a simple trust that God does answer and do what He says He will do. From there ... God brings the increase. There is a song I don't agree with. The words are... and I proved Him ore and ore... What I found in my life... God proved Himself to me ore and ore and still to this day He continues to shine in my life. Not my doing...His doing. He called, I answered. I replied with a Yes and started reading His word (the bible) so I could find out more about Him. As I would read, I would ask before reading... Lord, guide me and show me what you want me to learn today. Ask and it shall be given. ps As for asking Him to take away our will... i tried that and what I found is this... He put a protection around me and as I started to grow more, the fence around me was widened. Our free will is a gift He has given us that He will never take away but He will guide us daily with our asking daily.

What helped me this (7th time) in recovery was amzingly enough found in the Big Book text of Alcoholic Anonymous... Upon awakening..we asked God to direct our our thinking...especially that it be divorced from self pity, dishonest and self seeking motives. I do this..and then pray only for the knowledge of His will for me just for this this day and the power to carry that out. This keeps it simple for me...and the days just seem to add up. And I have foun d that amazing and wonderful miracles have happened the last 23 months of my sobriety...first of all, I have stayed clean and sober! Prayers for family and finances, and personal situations have and are being answered. One day at a time.
