It Is Well With My Soul

This hymn was written after two major traumas in Spafford’s life. The first was the great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially (he had been a wealthy businessman). Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford’s daughters died in a collision with anoher ship. Spafford’s wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, “Saved alone.” Several weeks later, as Spafford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, the Holy Spirit inspired these words. They speak to the eternal hope that all believers have, no matter what pain and grief befall them on earth.

Though we may miss those who leave us, we can do as he did and find comfort in knowing they are with Jesus.

What I received from this is that the assurance of salvation , the joy and the absolute presence

of God was so real...that the writer "knew" without any doubt that he would see his girls again.

It applies to all of life and to me speaks of recovery in that I accept 'my lot' and also take the action of faith to say "it is well" whether the circumstances remain or change.

It is a song that I usually sing when things go wrong as they normally do. All of us can take solace in the fact that God is rigth there in the storm with us. He has never and will never (except we leave him) abandon us when the storm rages. In whatever situation we may find ourselves anyday and anytime, let us remember He understands and bears with us and He gently and patiently tells us IT IS WELL!!! is there any reason why we should worry again?
