Hi David and Welcome! I am a recovering addict/alcoholic and my drug of choice was pain pills as well. Anything that took the pain. I used for 32 years before I finally got into Recovery. With the help of NA/AA, I have been clean and sober since July 25, 2005. I'm so glad that you are on here, sharing and opening up. I can relate to the sick Mom. My Mom right now is temporarily in a nursing home healing from a fractured pelvis. She has had serious health problems for years. I know the toll it takes on you when someone you love is hurting. I also know how you are beating yourself up for taking her pills. I also took my Mom's pills more times than I can count. And like you, I beat myself up for it. But you will soon find out that almost every addict in Recovery has taken meds from loved ones to keep ourselves from being sick. Just don't hang on to the guilt, it will only keep you sick. I strongly urge you to find some NA meetings to go to. You're reaching out and that it incredible. It's a Blessing that you can see you have a problem and want help. Welcome! People here do understand, you're in the right place.

Hello David. It is a struggle but know that the Lord will see you through it. As tough as it seems...it does get better. Keep praying and asking the Lord for His strength every moment you feel the need and the Lord will provide. You can find some added support and answers over on the substance abuse and Narcotics Addiction-12 Step Support forums. There are posts that say "sticky" beside them that are located above the blue line on each of the forums. Lots of water, warm showers and plenty of prayers... you will get through this. It does subside and get better and the Lord will be with you through it all.

Hi David, My heart goes out to you tonight. My husband takes Oxycodone 80 mg. three times a day but fudges a little here and there. He has chronic pain and sometimes cannot walk from the bedroom to the livingroom in the morning. I sometimes have to help him get dressed. He is an amputee ...was in a logging accident in 1964 when we had been married three years. He had to have his left leg amputated. All the years of using a prothesis, crutches, etc. has put too much stress on his body and his leg, shoulders, and hip are wearing out. He already had part of his pelvis removed due to a bone infection. He started out with 20's...then 20's & 40's...then 80's for now. His doc is thinking he needs the fast acting oxycodone in the morning so he can move easier. He also has arhtritis in all of his joints. He had a knee replacement a few years ago and now needs a hip & shoulder replacement. It is so much to go through. My drug of choice is alcohol and I have not been tempted by drugs although do take prescription drugs but not pain meds other than inflamatories for my arthritis. See we are old folks ....67 & 71. Our kids are all adults with the youngest of the five being 30. Two of our sons have had alcohol problems so I do understand where you are coming from. Right now you have to take care of yourself and get some medical help if need be for withdrawal from the medications. One time I quit Xanax just because I didn't want to take it anymore and went into withdrawal and thought I had a very bad case of the flu. I went to the doc and I had to go back on a small dose of Xanax & withdraw slowly off of it. You will be in my prayers and thoughts and I hope you will keep posting here and be able to be open and honest with yourself and don't be afraid to ask any questions. Members have already given you some good ideas. I watch a show on Friday nights here on A&E that is called Intervention. It is about addicts and alcoholics getting help for their addictions. It is really worth watching if you get it where you live. I am so sorry that your Mom is so sick. It must be so hard to be a part of her life now. You cannot feel guilty about the past....just try to work on your future a day at a time or a minute at a time. If there are any NA 12 Step Meetings in your area that would be another place to get help...even an AA 12 Step program would help. I will be looking for a post for all of us from you soon. Hang in their David. kelsh
