| I'm reading a book.
I found a book. "The Gospel of Mary Magdalene". Supposedly several writings were purposely not put into the Bible by the early Roman Catholics. One of them was the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Several of these writing have been found, authenticated, and translated. I am now reading the book. It is fascinating. It talks about the teachings that Jesus gave Mary when she first saw him resurrected at the tomb. I'll pass on interesting information as I read the book further. Right now I am exhausted and need to rest. I'll get back to you all later. Laurie

Laurie That book is based on the Gnostic gospels and around 300 AD the church said it isn't allowed as part of the bible. Gnostic teachings do not follow the bible. They were the newage teachings of the time and Gnostic gospels are the base used for many of the new age teachings we see today. The reasons why many things were not allowed... Sources showed many to be "new" writings. Start a church...write a book. The counsel of Trent they had the bishops of all the churches gather together. All came to an agreement as to what was original and what was newly added. Such is how we have the bible we see today.

Laurie, Protestant churches do not sanction the use of the Gnostic versions of the gospel. There are many tests that historians use to insure authenticity of these things and these writings not only didn't make the cut...but were found to be full of errors and and false statements. The DaVinci Deception by Erwin Lutzer is an excellent book about this topic. I hope you will read it. I found a copy at my local library. http://www.preachingtodaysermons.com/luerwhabthot.html- Here is a brief description of a sermon by Lutzer on this topic. There is a fee to download it but I think the outline given on this page is enough to show what he's talking about. |

cmc, My favorite CS Lewis is the screwtape letters. Love it. As I tend to read many religions and philosophies, I would be interested in that book, Laurie. Where did you find it and buy it? I have always had a certain fascination with Mary Magdelene. I would have liked to read that download, but all my funds are in cash rather than in bank, thus nothing on debit card.

Laurie I am not saying don't read your book but more so saying that we should test all things we read or hear against the bible and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This verse found in 1 John is what had the Bishops say no to the Gnostic writings. 1 John 4 Test the Spirits 1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. The Gnostic teaching fall short of the truth in many ways. They do make for good reading but can also misguide us unless we understand the Gospels with a little more depth to our understanding.

As I read the book, I am finding I am fascinated with the Gospel of mary magdalene, but I don't agree with the interpretation of the author (who is gnostic). I am also finding that most of the book is his interpretation, rather than her writings. I am a bit disappointed. I am trying to stick with what she is saying, rather than what the author 'thinks' she is saying. Do you get my drift. I have this fascination and belief in Mary Magdalene, for personal reasons, and personal experiences with praying to her. (when I was using). I also pray to her now for intercesion as the penitent one. A prayer of forgiveness of sins from Jesus. I posted it here before. I got the book at Barnes and Noble. I was looking through the Christian section.
